WikiProject: Gamecruft

[edit]

I've decided to create a WikiProject devoted to discussing what articles qualify as gamecruft, and what do not. Contact me if you are interested, or have questions. - A Link to the Past (talk) 07:57, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is how it will be:

  • Part 1: Gather up articles that are believed to be in need of being merged or redirected.
  • Part 2: Gather up people to discuss what articles deserve to stay, and what do not.
  • Part 3: Discuss this as a group.
  • Part 4: Act on our discussion.
  • Part 5: Hopefully, this part will involve us doing the same against the Pokémon articles, Fire Emblem articles or Final Fantasy articles. - A Link to the Past (talk) 03:25, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Contra etymology

[edit]

Came across this part in Contra series but isn't the Nicaraguan Contras a more likely source of the series title, as opposed to Iran-Contra which prompted Konami of America to do away with it for Super C? I'm just speculating but it doesn't seem to farfetched, or does it?

Oh, and hi! Long time no talky :) -Vic Vipr 14:23, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar!

[edit]

I thought I would award you the "CVG Barnstar" for your excellent edits to the CVG articles. Cheers! Thunderbrand 23:34, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I award you the CVG Barnstar for your incredible contributions to computer and video game articles. Congrats! Thunderbrand 23:34, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template:PhoneAreaCodes orphaning

[edit]

See Template:PhoneAreaCodes (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

You participated in this template's TfD and indicated a willingness to help orphan. I don't doubt you've been hard at work but I see there are still quite a few articles left on the inlink list. I'd appreciate it if you would help us finish this off. Thank you. John Reid 07:33, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wp:point

[edit]

why do you claim Category:Former country subdivisions was a point creation? such a cat simply did not exist. best regards Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:20, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The rename you suggest (Historical administrative divisions ...) would not reflect what it is like now. Like it is now it does not exclude non-administrative country subdivisions. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 15:40, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Border map

[edit]

This was the perfect map, Image:Us-mexico-border.jpg. Thanks for finding and uploading it. Cheers, -Will Beback 11:13, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template: Infobox Fraternity

[edit]

I think your edits the template led to the disabling of the "free_label" portion of the template. Check out Delta Sigma Phi in which the founders lost ther tag. I tried to fix it, but I couldn't get it right. Can you help me out with this? Dspserpico 13:51, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing the template. I tried to fix it but ended up just reverting it. Dspserpico 14:30, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gradius, again

[edit]

I wanted to tell you that I have been poking an awful lot at all related articles recently in an effort to address the many inconsistencies that once were, some cleaning up, factual errors etc. Anyway, just letting you know so it doesn't come as a complete shock or anything! Cheers -Vic Vipr 19:01, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When I'm not reaching out I am looking at the Gradius series page and thinking of expanding it with a Bacterion section, which, as you know, is the opposing force. But this encompasses Core Warships and perhaps parts of Final Bosses, any ideas where to put it? –Vic Vipr 12:44, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, you're unbanned! Anyway, Gradius Gaiden shows up in Galaxies introductory sequence, shouldn't it be moved back up in the template? -Vic Vipr 14:16, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I was referring to Template:Gradius series :) -Vic Vipr 15:42, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Timeline as requested (a bit rough though). -Vic Vipr 09:52, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually i menat one of those wikipedia timeline graphs showing colored boxes oin a linear scale or somethign
I don't believe I have seen one before, got any examples? -Vic Vipr 14:04, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Here and here and here and many more here http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:EasyTimeline_examples. I dont know whether horizontal or vertical would be better. Also shoudl we combine parodius and gradiu sstuff into one article? Whatever we do we should start applying this to all series pages. --larsinio (poke)(prod) 14:34, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

While not perfect, you can extract bits of information from the Japanese Gradius articles with google translate. Here's an example: [1].

Also, the japanese templates needn't be formatted, the little question mark is used instead of the usual J url. -Vic Vipr 11:23, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for the backup, and barnstar :) You can go ahead and add the soundtracks if you want to, I don't mind. ~ Vic Vipr 17:29, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure about Solar, there's so little info about them but I reckon Revised is an official title. I've actually thought about these other remakes too, a part of me wants them separate purely for convenience (including Life Force). Though the template is getting sort of crowded... ~ Vic Vipr 18:20, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think the intro weapons and tech chapters of Vic Viper are acceptable in their current form? I was wondering if we should move the cleanup tag further down the page. Oh, and also, would you agree to move Life Force out of Salamander as well? I suppose it's not an immediate necessity but I don't want to proceed without backing. Cheers ~ Vic Vipr 19:19, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox Fraternity and Georgia don't get along

[edit]

Hi, I see you've done some work on {{Infobox Fraternity}}. It has one little flaw where it won't handle Georgia (U.S. State) - you have to use the Georgia dab page instead. I'm thinking of simplifying the template and using the WP:AWB tool to fix the pages that use it but, if you have a better idea, let me know.  :) —Wknight94 (talk) 03:14, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Soundtrack albums

[edit]

I have removed the references to the soundtrack albums as these aren't relevant to the games, so why are you replacing them? Gingerfield rocks 09:51, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Parodius music

[edit]

I found an EXCELLENT site with information on the music for all the Parodius games, minus the first Parodius: [2]. I think we should definately use this information in the articles, because the series is well know for its music. Buzda 17:05, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging

[edit]

According to Orphanbot these images are not specifying the source and creator:

[edit]

Legal notices are relevant to the Namco articles. The articles are not just about the game's context, they're about the games and all their contexts. Please don't remove legal notices. And when you're going to make a change like this to a bunch of articles, please try to make a note before you go and do it. Gingerfield rocks 08:19, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use policy

[edit]

is already quite clear on the matter. ed g2stalk 16:26, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Because we shouldn't be justifying our copyright violations by finding loopholes, but instead trying to provide free content where available, and resorting to copyright material as a last resort. As it stands, there is no justification for these galleries. ed g2stalk 16:31, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Were not finding loopholes, were trying to adequately explain a topic. the CVG space depends oupon fair use, there is no free content when itcopmes to screenshots. And its an open issue, which is not settled. can you just temporarily hault all until there is a community consensus? --larsinio (poke)(prod) 16:32, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore it is your opinion that the jsutification given is just a way to "cheat" the system. I personalyl do not think you have enough information about the CVG aspect to this to justify what is and what is not fair use. "Fair use, ill know it when i see it" right, something like that? --larsinio (poke)(prod) 16:36, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The German Wikipedia manages fine without any copyright images at all.
We need to err on the side of caution. Images should not be on a page until we are sure they are allowed. ed g2stalk 16:38, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
1) this is not the german wikipedia, 2) a game article without a screenshot showing it is usless IMO. 3) It is established that CVG screenshots are valid type of fair use material. 4) The question is do you think screenshots are useful in explaining the capabil.iteis of a video game console? If the answer is yes then the effort shoudl be focused on not mass deleting, but on implementing the images in teh proper manner; i.e. contextual references and fair use rationale--larsinio (poke)(prod) 16:45, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Well spotted.
  2. I didn't say they weren't allowed on game articles.
  3. The are fair use in the context described on the template, that is in providing critical commentary of the contents of the image.
  4. They are useful, but a large gallery of them is not fair use. ed g2stalk 16:47, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Granted some of the galleries are large, but 4-8 screenshots is not what i consider large, specially if keepin in context its a system that has hundreds of games over several years. --larsinio (poke)(prod) 16:54, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As is already said on Template:game-screenshot, "[the image may be used] for identification and critical commentary on the computer or video game in question or". And this does not mean that we should shoehorn in some commentary just so we can continue to use the image. ed g2stalk 21:13, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox images

[edit]

A point was recently raised on WP:CVG talk [3] that there is a consensus to use cover art instead of titlescreens or other screenshots in the infobox. However, I'm personally a bit peeved in terms of arcade games where cover art for ports do not always accurately represent the arcade game, taking alterations into account such as visuals that have been scaled down or mechanics changed to accomodate the target platform etc. Could you take a moment to give your opinion on the matter? ~ Vic Vipr 14:16, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There does appear to be a consensus regarding use of cover art for infobox images, though for the Template:Infobox CVG variety, but not for Template:Infobox Arcade Game so the arcade titles can be left as they are. Though I'm considering adding cover art for some of the console-only releases for compliance. ~ Vic Vipr 09:25, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gradius media

[edit]

I've created Category:Gradius media for media (cover art, screens etc.) pertaining to Gradius as well as the Parodius games for a quick overview and access to related media. If you have some spare time, please feel free to add the category tag to any media that doesn't already have it. Cheers ~ Vic Vipr 13:19, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could you look into and post sources for some of the Gradius and Contra media you've uploaded? I've passed some on for fair use review so hopefully they'll make it out of this current deletion frenzy alive. Also, can one just use a considered WP policy as a basis? It certainly seems odd to me. ~ Vic Vipr 16:11, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll put the deletion of the logos on hold for the time being. Some lists were apparently accepted as Featured Lists with images present in form of cover art. See List of Oh My Goddess episodes and List of Stargate SG-1 episodes. ~ Vic Vipr 16:05, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
List of Gradius titles is a bit more glamorous now in the later sections. Logo licenses appears to be granted only for companies and organisations however, so the game logos will have to be deleted (except for Gradius and Parodius as they are in use). ~ Vic Vipr 09:20, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of songs involving computer and video games listed for deletion

An article that you have been involved in editing, List of songs involving computer and video games, has been listed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of songs involving computer and video games. Please look there to see why this is, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

3-D WorldRunner

[edit]

Fair enough. I still don't see why you don't agree with the presence of the game packaging in the infobox - as I said, it's practically convention. As it stands, the 3-D Worldrunner page is remarkably ugly; I'd like to incorporate the screenshots in the article as well, because they are all very relevant and necessary, but they just won't fit. On the other hand, aesthetics are very important to me, which leads to the current debate over screenshot galleries. Take my Sword of Kalin page, for example. It's a stub right now, but I'm sure people will still want to know what the game looks like! For now I'll leave 3-D Worldrunner as is - hopefully, in the future, I'll be able to better the page. I just think it's unfortunate that the number of screenshots for a game must conform to the amount of text in the game's article, that's all. --Tristam 19:49, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification. I'll keep this (ongoing) debate in mind in the future. --Tristam 20:28, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, this message is in response to the deletion of material on this wikipage. Tens of thousands of images have been deleted by a small handful of wikipedians, citing "fair use".

Would you be interested in joining a group on wikipedia which counters the heavy handed tactics of the copyright police. I can't fight them on my own. User talk:Ed g2s has began deleting fair use image on every person's user page and on several other pages, inspired by WP:FUC which was written by another paternal copyright policeman with absolutly no legal training and little understanding of copyright law.

I stared this page, with this purpose: User:Travb/Misguided and heavy handed tactics of some admins regarding copyright

Please tell others about this project. The paternal copyright police are well organized and are intoxicated with their own trival power here on wikipedia. Like most authoritarian personalities, these misguided copyright fanatics have finally have overstepped the bounds of good sense and restraint, when they began deleting tens of thousands images from wikiusers' pages. Only a large number of wikipedians will stop this abuse. Travb 13:45, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The logos are identical but for the colour. Describing the logo as "a blue version of the normal logo" is an adequate free replacement of the image. There is absolutely no need for every varation of the logo. ed g2stalk 21:34, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From WP:FUC: "The amount of copyrighted work used should be as little as possible... Do not use multiple images or media clips if one will serve the purpose adequately.". ed g2stalk 21:38, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Should i just put in-line teh r-g-b values for the blue?". If you think it's that important. However there is no need to have two copies of the logo just to illustrate this minor difference. See above policy. ed g2stalk 21:46, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! How did you find me? I am very busy with school and such. I am sorry I cannot help.

Thank you for the offer!

PS3 NPOV dispute

[edit]

You tagged the Playstation 3 article for a NPOV dispute. I have not seen you state your reasons on the article's talk page, and I was wondering if you could do so. Are there any specific things in the article you take issue with? If so, it would be very helpful if you could point them out. --Codemonkey 21:16, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you say about that?

Template:Databases

Hi! Can you explain why you reverted my edit to Template:Databases? That is, why do you want the template to link to List of relational database management systems twice? --Mikeblas 02:20, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Face Off (arcade game)

[edit]

Why do you keep removing the info on the international teams? Puckman765 08:34, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to redesign this barnstar as it infringes on Konami's copyright and trademark. Thanks, ed g2stalk 09:21, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"I would recommend staying out of the CVG space"

[edit]

Please have a good think about how terribly incivil this comment is. No one owns an article. And please be aware that I examine every link before I remove it, and that they in fact all did fail to satisfy the guideline. If there are any links in particular that you object to being removed, the appropiate place to take that up is on the article's talk. brenneman {L} 01:30, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since there are now two comments on my talk, I'll respond there as opposed to watching this page in following this message. - brenneman {L} 01:33, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As someone who does frequently edit the CVG space, I agree with Aaron. Furthermore, your wholesale reverts were inappropriate, especially since a number of the things you reverted back into the articles in question were either completely broken, or simply irrelevant junk. Please be more cautious in the future. Nandesuka 01:33, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Revert to revision XXXX using popups

[edit]

I've just noticed that you've done a little bulk-reversion of my edits. This is an incrideibly rude thing to do, as this de facto roll back should only be used for vandalism. If nothing else, it leaves no meaniingful edit summary. So please do not do this again.
