Leonid Borisovich Alaev (Russian: Леонид Борисович Алаев; October 20, 1932, in Moscow - July 31, 2023[1], also in Moscow[2]) was a Soviet Russian historian and indologist,[3][3] Doctor of Sciences in Historical Sciences, principal researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences,[2] professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations,[4] and honorary professor at the Pedagogical Institute of Irkutsk State University.[5]
He was the editor of Oriens (1988–99).[2][3][4]
Career
He graduated from the Faculty of History at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1954.[5][6] Since 1956, he was working at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.[5]
In 1960, he defended his candidate's dissertation.[5] In 1982, he defended his doctoral dissertation.[5] In 1986, he received the title of professor.[5]
Alaev is an author of about 250 works.[5] He published in the Great Russian Encyclopedia and the Cambridge Economic History of India.[2]
His work has been reviewed by Alexander Gordon[7] and Gennady Drach.[8] He was a friend of Leonid Vasilyev.[9]
