The contents of the Quantum (Mozilla) page were merged into Gecko (software) on 3 July 2019 and it now redirects there. For the contribution history and old versions of the merged article please see its history.
I'm not sure whether Quantum is the name of any new software or just the neame of the project. As in, it's unclear if anyone will ever be able to "download Quantum," whereas users can currently download Firefox or Servo, and will presumably still be able to do so going forward. Is the name Servo going to be put into disuse, and will Quantum supersede it? Who knows?
So while it's unclear if Quantum is or isn't a piece of software, this article would seem to imply it is definitely a piece of software (a rendering engine to be precise). At this point, it could easily be a project codename, labeling the work people are putting in, or a software codename, labeling the code itself in addition to the work. Any solid clarifications from a good source would help to ensure we are not misleading readers. (I admit I don't know the answer to this question.)
I rewrote the entire article and added important background information that clarifies what Quantum is. I too was confused if it was a rename of Gecko, but it doesn't appear to be. The confusion stems from this misleading press blurb which implies a rename. But the official Mozilla Wiki (now the article's primary ref) doesn't mention any rename. 24.211.196.145 (talk) 19:06, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just removed a "merge with Firefox" tag that was added earlier today because Firefox is already a rather lengthy article and Quantum has received some external mention (like the referenced press blurb). Since this is a recent project, circumstance may change, but for now it's best to keep it as-is. 24.211.196.145 (talk) 19:15, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
