High School Musical: The Theater Show is a stage adaptation of the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical

Plot Summary

Act I

Act I opens at East High ('Wildcat Cheer'). The story begins with Troy bragging about meeting a 'hot little snow bunny' (Gabriella) during vacation. Gabriella tells Taylor (her new found Braniac friend) of her vacation, as does Troy with his friends ('The Start of Something New').

Back at school, Chad, Taylor, and the rest of the students tell of their New Year resolutions. In homeroom, Mrs. Darbus begins handing out detentions until the students are saved by the bell. The Jocks head to basketball practice ('Get'cha Head in the Game'), and later the students head to the theater for detention, where Taylor asks Gabriella (who recieved a detention) to join the Science Decathalon team based on the printouts Ryan planted in her locker.

Gabriella auditions for the school play and Troy, realizing she has no partner, volunteers ('What I've Been Looking For'). After being called back for a second audition, Troy and Gabriella tell their friends, who spread the news via cell phones ('Cellular Fusion'). Meanwhile, Sharpay is furious. How dare they steal the lead roles and break the 'rules' of East High. The whole school agrees and lyrical chaos erupts during a lunch break ('Stick To The Status Quo'), which culminates in Sharpay getting caked by Zeke.

Act II

Act II begins with a recap of events by Jack scott, followed by Troy and Gabriella retreating to the rooftop garden ('I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You'). Meanwhile, the Jocks and Brainiacs plot against the infatuated duo during study hall. Mrs. Darbus, who Sharpay lied to about Troy and his father (Coach Bolton), storms in during practice. After being screamed at by Mrs. Darbus, Coach Bolton turns around and yells at his son, who for the first time, stands up to his dad.

The Jocks and Brainiacs put their plan to work, pushing at Troy and Gabriella. Eventually, Troy gives in and pretends that he doesn't like Gabriella, completely oblivious to the phone in Zeke's hand, transmitting Troy's words directly to Gabriella ('Counting on You'). Troy and Gabriella, lonely and upset, sing 'When There Was Me and You'.

Eventually, the Jocks and Braniacs (lead by Chad and Taylor) feel terrible for manipulating their friends for their own selfish needs and, hearing that the callbacks have been moved up by Darbus (compliments of Sharpay) to the same time as the big game and the Science Decathalon, decide to lend a helping hand ('We're All in this Together').

On the day of the big game/Decathalon/callbacks, the students are excited for the festivities ('Bop to the Top'), during which Taylor engineers an electronic meltdown during which all the students move to the theater. Mrs. Darbus, hesitant to allow Troy and Gabriella audition due to their tardiness, softens and lets them audition as the auditorium fills with students ('Breaking Free').

The end of Act II brings us to the gym where all the main characters wrap up their plots (Chad asks out Taylor, Zeke gets Sharpay to be nice to him, and Jack Scott and Kelsi fall head over heels for each other, literally) the Wildcats win the big game and the Decathalon. The students celebrate ('We're All in This Together Reprise') and the cast takes their bows ('Megamix').
