[edit]Binghampton has always included the area south of Broad Avenue and north of Poplar Avenue between the railroad (?Illinois Central?) on the east and Hollywood Street on the west. I have lived in the midtown area, in and around Binghampton, since 1975, and in talking to the older residents, have learned that Binghampton is a very old, formerly unincorporated region of Shelby County before being annexed into Memphis. I cannot cite references yet, but will work on that when I have the opportunity to visit the Memphis Room at the new Hooks Library. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ragityman (talk • contribs) 18:23, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Cool, that would be a great addition to this article if some information from published sources could be added to it. I am looking forward to the results of your efforts at the library. doxTxob \ talk 01:16, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

- May be a delay in my research. Housing troubles, little time for the library lately.
- Are you a contributor to the Tennessee project mentioned in the template? I'm wondering how to add neighborhoods to the list. I've noticed that even neighborhoods mentioned in existing wiki-articles are not represented, and I've thought of a few which seem to be notable, also not mentioned.

- Regarding spelling, I was recently told by a minister working in the area that residents of east Binghampton, maybe east of Scott Street, spell it with the "p," while west of Scott, they spell it without the "p." Will also try to source that.

- I will be making some changes, based on library research, long overdue. Most refs are to the Commercial Appeal. Unfortunately, the articles were found in a clippings file, so I have dates of publication, but often not page numbers. That will have to do until I can access microfilm for page numbers.
- Binghamton was NOT named after Bingham Street. The town and the street both harken back to WH Bingham, founder, magistrate and first mayor of Binghamton. His statement about the notorious "p" is that when he filed for the charter, there was a clerical spelling error. The p was deleted in 1907 "by legislative act" (unspecified), but usage seems to have prevailed in this case. The postmaster, when interviewed (not by me, it's in a C-A clipping), stated that the sign on the P.O. was wrong. "It's been changed. The p is not on my rubber stamp." The L&N Railroad was aware of the misspelling, but never bothered to repaint their sign. The residents and other Memphians pronounced the p in saying "Binghamton," regardless of legislation. I haven't yet found reference to the lawsuit based on race, but the library closed, and there are many more clippings yet to be read,
. I will also be clarifying the boundaries — the original town limits, and after expansion. rags (talk) 17:20, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

North Memphis?
[edit]I think I will have to take issue with calling Binghampton "North Memphis." It was once considered east of town, but I have recently heard the U of M campus referred to as Midtown, so usages change as the city changes. But North Memphis conveys particular ideas that I don't think is to do with Binghampton, some good and some bad. Does anyone else read this page? rags (talk) 20:07, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
Going to put the update ...
[edit]... template on the section about the under construction grocery store, etc., since that has either come to fruition or not beyond by now and we need to see what happened (with documented sources, of course). 2600:1004:B10D:9D01:F44B:9844:ADB9:A1F5 (talk) 00:52, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
