The name does not originate from that marriage. William Douglas changed his name to William Hamilton, and the family was known simply as "Hamilton" until the mid-ninteenth century. john k (talk) 15:56, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Quite wrong, Lord Selkirk changed the surname of his family to Douglas-Hamilton upon his marriage to Anne, 3rd Duchess of Hamilton in the 17thc. He did not change his own surname as that was the same as his peerage, so Selkirk became Hamilton. Brendandh (talk) 19:06, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
