Waheed ur Rehman Para is an Indian politician who served as the Secretary Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and is currently the Youth Wing President of Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party.

Considered as a close aid to former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, he formally joined the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party in 2013 as was appointed at its youth wing president.[1] In subsequent years, he was appointed as Political analyst to then J&K CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in 2015 [2].

He was arrested by National Investigation Agency on 25th November 2020 for alleged terror links [3], however was again rearrested by J&K Police after receiving bail from Special NIA Court [4][5]. After remaining incarcerated for over 17 months, he was released after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court granted him bail after observing "The evidence as is gathered by the prosecution is too sketchy to be believed prima facie true, that too, with a view to deny bail to the appellant." [6][7][8]

Personal Life

Born and raised in Naira village of South Kashmir's Pulwama district, he completed his schooling from the local area and university education from Islamic University of Science & Technology and later on went on to study investigative journalism at Boston University.

Political Career

Waheed entered politics in 2013 and was subsequently appointed as the Youth Wing President of Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party.[9] Believed to enjoy popular support in South Kashmir, primarily amongst youngsters he played a pivotal role Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party winning all 3 Lok Sabha seats in Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and emerging as the single largest party in 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election.

He served as the Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council from July 2016 to 2018[10]. In 2018, he survived an attack on life after terrorists fired at his vehicle in Central Kashmir's Budgam district [11] [12][13]

Followig arrest by the National Investigation Agency, he won the DDC Elections, 2020 from Pulwama constituency while being under custody[14][15][16][17]
