Not a synonym

[edit]

Tertiary is not a synonym for Cenozoic. In any case the term 'Tertiary' was officially abandoned in 2004 through a decision of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (in favour of the Palaeogene and the succeeding Neogene Period) though of course it will be widely found in the literature for many years to come. A struggle ensued to retain the term 'Quaternary' - it was ultimately successful but looked for a while as though it would be subsumed into a Neogene extending to the present day. cheers Geopersona (talk) 05:30, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
