On 16 February 2024, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service announced that Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny died in a prison in the Russian Arctic while serving a 19-year prison sentence.[1][2] Navalny's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said on social media that his team could not immediately confirm his death until his lawyer visits the prison.[3][4]

On 16 February 2024, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service announced that Alexei Navalny had died in prison, in Federal Governmental Institution IK-3, Kharp, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, after taking a walk and feeling unwell that morning. The prison statement claimed that "All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out but did not yield positive results... The paramedics confirmed the death of the convict."[1]

Domestic
Journalist Andrei Zakharov commented "Navalny did not die, he was killed." Opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin noted that as of yet Navalny's death was not confirmed and stated "I pray that the information turns out to be false. Alexei [was] one of the most talented and brave people in Russia I ever knew."[5]
Protests were reported in Moscow, Tomsk, Perm, and Belgorod.[6]
International
- European Union: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote that she was "Deeply disturbed and saddened by news of the death of Alexei Navalny."[7]
- Georgia: President Salome Zourabichvili called Navalny's death "a tragedy for all democracy and human rights defenders" and expressed her condolences for his family and "those who in Russia continue his fight for democracy."[8][9]
- Germany: Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he "paid for his courage with his life".[10]
