The 2024 Kinmen fishing boat sinking incident [3][4] was a maritime incident involving the sinking of a mainland Chinese fishing boat by the Coast Guard Administration (Taiwan) (CGA) near the eastern coast of Kinmen, on the afternoon of February 14, 2014. All four mainland Chinese fishermen on board were rescued by the CGA, though two later died of injuries.

The incident led to a major escalation of conflicts in the Cross-Strait relations.

Background

Incident

On February 14, 2024, at approximately 13:45, boat CP-1051 of the Taiwan [[Coast Guard Administration (Taiwan)|Coast Guard Administration]] (CGA)'s 9th Coast Guard spotted an unnamed mainland Chinese fishing boat fishing within the Kinmen restricted waters at about 1.2 nautical miles east of Beiding Island, and approached the vessel. The coast guard vessel proceeded to chase after the fishing boat, leading to a collision and the fishing boat's capsizing. [5][6] All four fishermen on the fishing boat were rescued and detained by the CGA, but two of them later died of injuries. [3][4][7]

The two surviving Chinese fishermen were detained and brought to Kinmen for investigation. According to Kinmen local authorities, they were migrants from Sichuan and Guizhou working in Fujian. The CGA squad suspected that they were picking up their fishing net when they wandered into Kinmen waters. [5] On February 16, the CGA squad submitted autopsy reports of the deceased fishermen to the Kinmen local authorities and preliminarily concluded their causes of death as drowning. [8]
