Name of article

[edit]

Some confusion here - the lede is written as though the article is about the Wye Valley AONB which is not the same thing as the Wye Valley, the latter being the full extent of the valley through which this river runs, and the AONB amounting to just a small fraction of that length. Either the article should be expanded to encompass the entire valley from Pumlumon to Chepstow or else retitled to reflect the fact that it refers only to the AONB which corresponds to the lower gorge section of its course. cheers Geopersona (talk) 07:51, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blame me for starting it... a long time ago. You're possibly right. In some ways it may be better if the non-AONB text were surgically removed, and the article then retitled. The only worry I have would be if editors then sought to include only information relating to the formal AONB designation itself - which essentially relates to the current perceived quality of the landscape - and sought to exclude other information about the area, such as details about its history, biodiversity, economy, etc., which is not directly related to the area being an AONB. Incidentally, the AONB covers a much more extensive area than the gorge - it extends across relatively flat areas between Hereford and Goodrich, and then the gorge south of there. But, I accept that it covers much less than half of the whole Wye valley. Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:00, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your concerns though I've no strong views either way on the matter; indeed I've wavered on various occasions as to what ought to go in an article on River X and what (if anything) in a companion or alternative article on X valley. It makes no sense to talk about a river in the absence of its valley nor vice versa so the overlap is necessarily great where such sibling articles are concerned. Perhaps others will throw in their twopen'th. cheers Geopersona (talk) 19:40, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
