I note that several of your students have recently edited the article Educational games. I have reverted their changes for now based on two criteria:
- The "board games" section was based entirely on a single source: "Up Your Game:..." at The Free Library. This does not appear to be a reliable source as there does not appear to be any editorial oversight, and the article represents only a single author's viewpoint, not any actual research into the educational value of the games mentioned.
- The addition to the "Video Games" section adds redundant information using a new source (Mosiane & Brown, 2020) that does not appear to be any significant expansion over the previously used sources. This addition also adds information about specific apps, providing no reliable sources for the educational value of those apps.
- As a last problem (although this is fixable if the other problems are addressed) the students are adding sources that link to ProQuest search results, rather than to the original online articles. For users without a ProQuest account, this is not useful.
I would recommend that you instruct your students to make their edits in a sandbox and only publish them once they have been reviewed. If you are not able to review all the edits, you and your students might seek assistance at the relevant article talk pages.
@Ian (Wiki Ed): Is this a reasonable request for a WikiEdu class? Or am I just being overly picky? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 18:11, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
- It does seem like these students need a bit more help before moving their work to mainspace. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:11, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Hello Jialeijiang. I note that you are the course coordinator of an ESL workshop. The course goals for this course state that students should seek to improve stub or start articles, using their English-language skills. I wanted to make you aware that the articles your students have selected are likely not appropriate for this class. These include Dancehall, Jiaozi, American Chinese cuisine, EA Sports FC 24, Video games in China, and honestly almost every article selected. They are already written in advanced English, and I am concerned that someone just learning the language will not be able to improve the articles to Wikipedia's standards. For example: the sandbox work of LikunZhang7 and Yuangxi Wang is certainly not encyclopedic in nature, and the existing articles are already substantial and cover everything they have written. @Ian (Wiki Ed): is this an appropriate assignment to be giving? My concern is that English Wikipedia editors are going to have to spend time cleaning up contributions for pretty much any of these that are published. There must be a better way to direct the efforts of these students, perhaps in a translation-oriented assignment. Fritzmann (message me) 16:17, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Jialeijiang and Ian (Wiki Ed): I wanted to follow up with this. I notice that this week's assignment is to "move your work live - to the "mainspace." I have reviewed the sandboxes of every student, and none of them meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion. I would like to reiterate my concern that if this course continues as it is, and especially has students move edits into mainspace, it will create a lot of headache and will not be a productive endeavor. - @Fritzmann2002 I asked Helaine to get in touch with User:Jialeijiang about the concerns (Helaine handles that aspect of things). I apologise for not letting you know about this. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:38, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
