Uri Segal is an Israeli musical conductor. He was born on 7 March 1944 in Jerusalem, Israel. [1]
Segal studied Violin and conducting at the Rubin Conservatory in his hometown. From 1966 to 1969 he attended the Guildhall School of Music.
In 1969, shortly after his graduation, Segal won first prize in the Dimitri Mitropolous Conducting Competition in New York City. For a year after this, he served as Leonard Bernstein's assistant with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, before beginning four years of service with the Philharmonia Hungarcia in Hungary, where he was employed as principal conductor.
From 1980 to 1982 he was the chief conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. On relinquishing this role, he concentrated solely on a similar position with the Israel Chamber Orchestra.
Segal returned to the United States in 1989 when he became Music Director of the Chautaqua Symphony Orchestra, as well as working as chief conductor for the Century Orchestra Osaka in Japan.
As of 2007, the 63-year-old Segal is still an active conductor at regular concerts. His career has so far stretched some 40 years.
