During the ongoing Israel–Hamas war, the symbol of the inverted red triangle has been used by both Hamas and supporters of the militant group.

Videos published by Hamas during fighting in the Gaza Strip have used the red triangle to mark Israeli military targets such as tanks just before they are struck.[1][2][3][4] Usage of the symbol has spread to the international war-related protests, with some protestors using their figures to make the sign of the triangle.[5] Some theorize the symbol originates from the red triangle that appears in the Palestinian flag.[4]

In July 2024, the German Bundestag controversially voted to ban the symbol following an urgent motion filed by the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party.[4][6]
