Imane Khelif (Arabic: إيمان خليف, romanizedʾĪmān Khalīf) is an Algerian amateur boxer. She represented Algeria in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.[1]

Early life

Khelif grew up in Tiaret, a rural village in northwestern Algeria. She originally played football before switching to boxing. In her early years, she had to commute to a neighboring village to attend training sessions, and sold scrap metal to afford the bus fare.[2] Her father did not approve of boxing for girls.[3]

Career

2018–2021

In the New Delhi 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships, Khelif participated for the first time, where she ranked 17th after being eliminated from the first round. She then represented Algeria in the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships held in Russia, where she ranked 33rd after being eliminated from the first round against Natalia Shadrina. Khelif represented Algeria in the lightweight event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She was defeated by Ireland's Kellie Harrington in the quarterfinals.[4]

2022–2023

Khelif participated in the 2022 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships and became the first Algerian female boxer to reach the final after she defeated the Netherlands' Chelsey Heijnen.[5] She faced Ireland's Amy Broadhurst in the final and was defeated.[6]

In March 2023, Khelif was disqualified for failing to meet eligibility criteria shortly before her gold medal bout at the 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships. The Algerian Olympic Committee said Khelif was disqualified for medical reasons. It was later reported that the disqualification was due to high levels of testosterone.[7][8] According to International Boxing Association president Umar Kremlev, DNA testing of Khelif and other athletes "proved they had XY chromosomes and were thus excluded from the sports events".[9] Khelif is not transgender, but it is alleged that she has a disorder of sex development (DSD), which causes some females to have XY chromosomes and blood testosterone levels typical of a male.[10][11] In Algeria, the country that Khelif represents, transgender identity is prohibited, changing gender or sex on identity documents is not permitted, nor are medical or hormonal treatments allowed to transition to another sex. Khelif made an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport but later withdrew it,[3] making the IBA decision legally binding.[12] In 2024, the IBA said that Khelif and others "did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognized test, whereby the specifics remain confidential".[13]

2024

In January 2024, Khelif became a UNICEF national ambassador.[14][3]

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), using different rules to the IBA, cleared Khelif to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, confirming that she complied with all necessary eligibility and medical regulations for the event,[8][15] without detailing what these eligibility rules were.[12] The IOC noted that Khelif was a woman according to her passport and that this was not a "transgender issue".[12]

In the second round of the women's 66 kg, she defeated Angela Carini of Italy in 46 seconds after Carini withdrew, citing intense pain in her nose.[16] Khelif is scheduled to fight Luca Hámori of Hungary in the quarterfinals on 3 August.
