Lazar began making films in the early 2000s, upon graduating from The Steve Tisch School of Film and Television in Tel Aviv. His early work included camera assisting and operating for Israeli television and films[4]. In 2007 he relocated to Los Angeles to attend the American Film Institute Conservatory’s cinematography program [5]. Following his graduation, Lazar worked with notable filmmakers such as Nicole Conn[6], Richard Speight Jr[7]. and Isaac Florentine[8]. In Vietnam, Lazar collaborated with Vietnamese-American writer and director Charlie Nguyễn, filming local box office hits[9][10] Tèo em[11] and De Mai tinh 2.

In 2016, Lazar founded[12] New York based production studio MiLa Media with entrepreneur Dr. David M. Milch[13]. MiLa Media's films include Past Life, directed by Avi Nesher, telling the story of Lazar’s grandfather[14]. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival[15]. Other films produced by MiLa Media include Nesher's The Other Story[16], and The New Group Theater’s Waiting For Godot[17][18], starring Ethan Hawke and John Leguizamo, filmed at the actors' homes[19] during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, MiLa Media expanded its business to include film distribution and sales[20]. As a sales agent, Lazar sold Every Time I Die, a film in which he served also as a lead-producer and cinematographer[21], and The Unborn, a film which he directed[22].

Teaching Career

Tal Lazar’s teaching career began during his 3 year compulsory service in the Israeli Defense Forces. Following training and operational activity as an infantry soldier, Lazar was trained in teaching and curriculum design. For his innovations in training methods at the IDF, Lazar received the highest honor for non-combat achievements, awarded by president of Israel, Ezer Wiezman in the year 2000.

In 2011, two years after earning his MFA[5] at the American Film Institute Conservatory, Lazar was invited by cinematography discipline chair Stephen Lighthill, ASC to join its faculty[23]. In the following 7 years, Lazar taught The Art & Craft of Cinematography course[24], covering all technical aspects of cinematographic techniques. He developed and taught The Language of Cinematography course[25], a course bringing both cinematographers and directors together which is still offered today.

While teaching at AFI, Lazar developed Digital Cinematography Fundamentals[26] for Berklee College of Music, a course offered on Berklee College of Music's online platform.

In 2018, Lazar relocated to New York City where he joined the faculties of Columbia University’s School of the Arts[27] and The City College of New York’s Media Communication Arts programs[28]. Lazar's courses are offered online by Sundance Institute’s Collab platform[29][30], as well as other online platforms such as MZed.com[31], Cinecours.com[32] in French and Xinpianchang[33] in Chinese. Lazar visits various other schools as a guest speaker, including Yanjing Institute of Technology Media College in Beijing[34], and speaks at conventions, such as the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation Resource Conference[35]. As a writer, Lazar's texts can be read on cinema technology news website CineD.com[36], as well as on Substack[37].

Technology Career

Lazar is a self-taught programmer and technology entrepreneur. The first programming language he learned was C++, and his first employment in the technology sector was for internet service provider Shani Technologies[38], one out the five ISPs operating in Israel in the 1990s. He was the youngest member of NetKing[39], one of the largest Israeli websites of the period [40]. In 1995, following prime minister Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination, NetKing launched[41] an online memorial page which allowed people from around the world to light a digital candle[42] in Rabin's memory, a function Lazar implemented. Following his service at the IDF, Lazar joined Israeli IT firm Ness Technologies as a web developer. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Lazar combined his activities in filmmaking, education and technology by launching Quonder[43], an education technology startup utilizing the benefits of visual storytelling[44]. Quonder's learning platform was used by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges University Commission to train its evaluators[45]
