Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Shenme (talk | contribs) at 03:35, 25 April 2007 (→‎[[User:Socom49|Socom49]]: name primarily of a government entity?). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This page is for bringing attention to usernames which may be in violation of Wikipedia's username policy. Before listing a username here, consider if it should be more appropriately reported elsewhere, or if it needs to be reported at all:

Do NOT post here if:

  • the user in question has made no recent edits.
  • you wish to have the block of a user reviewed. Instead, discuss the block with the blocking administrator (see also Wikipedia:Blocking policy § Unblocking).

Before adding a name here you MUST ensure that the user in question:

  • has been warned about their username (with e.g. {{subst:uw-username}}) and has been allowed time to address the concern on their user talk page.
  • has disagreed with the concern, refused to change their username and/or continued to edit without replying to the warning.
  • is not already blocked.

If, after having followed all the steps above, you still believe the username violates Wikipedia's username policy, you may list it here with an explanation of which part of the username policy you think has been violated. After posting, please alert the user of the discussion (with e.g. {{subst:UsernameDiscussion}}). You may also invite others who have expressed concern about the username to comment on the discussion by use of this template.

Add new requests below, using the syntax {{subst:rfcn1|username|2=reason ~~~~}}.

Socom49 (talk · contribs)

This username clearly represents the copyrighted game series "Socom" and is thus in violation of Wikipedia's policy for usernames. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.161.72.94 (talkcontribs) 02:58, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"The starting place to discuss a questionable (but not clearly inappropriate) username is on the user's talk page," and you have not done this. Please do so (use {{subst:usernameconcern}} if you like), and come back if this does not resolve the matter. Note that User:Socom49 has had this name since 15 December 2006, and that the game mentioned uses a pre-existing name (SOCOM). -- BenTALK/HIST 03:27, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anon IP has added the usernamediscussion template to user's talk page. Socom49 has not edited since April 5 2007, so they don't know of concern yet. User has edited since April 2006 with no blocks. User page says they have created pages and also improved others.

Note that SOCOM is a disambiguation page with several possible definitions, including six games. In perusing the user's contributions I see no overlap with the games industry. Note also that as for the dab page, the first Google hit [1] is for United States Special Operations Command, so apparently the games are derived from the military division? Anyway, barring some additional information, it would seem the name does not transgress the name of a series of games, whose name is copied from a government entity.
