Sennin Buraku, roughly Hermit Village, was the first late night anime. Broadcast on Fuji TV from September 4 1963 to February 23 1964. It was quite risqué for its time and came on shortly before midnight.
It was a romantic comedy taking place in historical China. The characters are very traditionally dressed (e.g. kimonos.)
It was based on an adult comic strip of the same name by Koo Kojima, that is published in the adult magazine Asahi Geino. The series was in black and white, and was produced by the now defunct Tele-Cartoon Japan. The Sennin Buraku manga is the longest running manga ever. It has surpassed Peanuts as the longest running comic strip with only one author. It was first published in the first issue of Asahi Geino in 1956, and is still running.[1] It also spawned a live-action movie.
