It was a big hit in Sweden and its neighbouring countries in 2005, being in the top ten for four months. She has released two successful albums and is also a popular television performer.[1][2]

Her biggest hits so far have been the songs What's in It for Me, Welcome to the City, Champion, Shooting Star and Don't Cry Your Heart Out. The first song was also a hit in the Swedish neighbouring states Denmark, Norway and Finland. It achieved the status of most played song by mid 2005 in Poland.

Biography

Early life

Amy Diamond was born on April 15, 1992 to an English father and a Swedish mother in Norrköping, Sweden. Soon after her birth the family moved to England, where she lived until she was 4 ½. Her family moved back to Sweden, this time to Jönköping, where she started figure skating as a hobby when she was 6 years old.[1] She turned out to have some talent for it, since she won gold medals in it. She also went to a dance and theater school, and she participated in some theater and TV productions.[3] She has two younger sisters, Lisa and Holly, and a big sister called Danielle. [4] [5]

Diamond has loved singing since she was two years old.[5] One of her first public performances was at 8 years of age on a talent show Småstjärnorna, where she performed miming to Belinda Carlisle's Heaven is a Place on Earth and became third.[6] In 2004 she participated in many talent competitions, among which were Minimelodifestivalen and Swedish TV4's Super Troupers. In Mix megapol summer idol the main prize was to record a song in a studio, and it was in the recording studio where she was discovered and offered a commercial record deal.[7] Markus Sepehrmanesh, one of the songwriters for her albums, told in an interview that she sang perfectly and exactly like they wanted. What's in It for Me was recorded in one and half an hour and it was released in the following February.[3]

2005

The single was a huge success, even though some Swedish TV stations refused to show the music video. They argued that she was too young for it. Nevertheless the song got a lot of radio play, and by March it had reached the top position on the Swedish singles chart and was eventually awarded a platinum record.[1] Due to the success a full album was recorded and This Is Me Now was released in May 2005. The album was a comparable hit, and she went on a concert tour around Sweden in the summer. She also appeared on numerous TV shows during this period.[8] She became known for singing live instead of playback in her public performances.

In July she signed a distribution deal with Warner to promote it internationally. During mid-2005 the album had also became popular in Denmark, Norway, Finland and Poland. What's in it for me was heard frequently on many radio channels, and it became 19th most played song in Finland in 2005.[9] Two more singles were released in the summer: Welcome to the City, which was also a big radio hit, and Champion. In late 2005 she went on a promotion tour in Central Europe and filmed a new music video for What's in It for Me in Barcelona. She appeared on TV in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, and a special edition of the album was released, which contained 2 new songs.[8]

Her singing voice has been characterized as being secure and balanced in Super Troupers.[3] Bettina Sågbom described her voice as being unbelievable, and her voice was advertized as "shining and characteristic" by the record label. She hasbeen compared to Carola, who also started her career as a young girl.[5]

Amy Diamond was nominated for several awards in 2005. At the young age of only 13, as the youngest performer in the history of the award, she received the Nordic Music Award for the best Nordic hit (What's in It for Me), which was handed to her in Denmark.[10] She´s also the youngest artist ever to receive two NRJ Radio Awards for Best Swedish Act and Best Swedish Female Artist. Diamond is the youngest ever artist nominated for the Swedish Grammis.[1] She had three nominations: Best Swedish Female Artist, Song of the Year And The newcomer of the year. Diamond also received a Nickelodeon award for Hit of the Year. She had nominations for the Swedish Rockbjörnen.[11] She also received the very exclusive award "Best Swedish Artist" from Poland.

2006–present

In February 2006 Amy Diamond started recording her second album. The first single from it was called Don't Cry Your Heart Out, and the album Still Me Still Now was released in May.[12] Despite the relatively quiet winter when not much was heard about her, the second album proved anticipated. When she was interviewed in the morning talk show Nyhetsmorgon on TV4 two days before the announced release date, she was handed a gold record for it. The album had already sold enough copies on pre-orders only.[13]

In mid 2006 Amy Diamond took part in the Diggiloo tour, where she performed, among other songs, Edith Piaf's Je ne regrette rien. Even though the second album wasn't as big success outside Sweden as the first one was, it was still popular in her home country, and she gave many concerts on her own too. In the summer Amy was crowned 2006 Summer Tour Queen in the largest evening newspaper Aftonbladet where the readers vote for the artists. She released two more singles later in 2006, Big Guns and It Can Only Get Better, as well as continued appearing on television. Among others, she appeared in prime-time shows such as Sommarkrysset, Gokväll and Vinterkrysset.

She started receiving other type of requests in addition to her music career. In 2006 she did also some print modeling and television work. She appeared in a mail-order catalogue for Ellos, and did some promotional work for Statoil and the sport store chain Stadium.[14] In December, she appeared as an ice princess in the Swedish Christmas series Lassemajas detektivbyrå.[15] The show let her show her figure skating skills, which were left unused since her music career took off.

As of 2007, Amy Diamond has started a fan club and publishes a fan magazine. She is working on her third album and looks forward to doing her own concert tour in the summer.
