The HTC Hermes is a 3.5G/HSDPA Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC phone manufactured by High Tech Computer Corporation of Taiwan. It is a part of the first line of phones directly marketed and sold by HTC, and is referred to as the HTC TyTN.

Features

The Hermes has a sliding QWERTY 41-key keyboard, jog wheel, and 2.8" touch screen LCD.

Supports Wi-Fi, worldwide high speed internet access (Triband UMTS, Quadband EDGE, GPRS), Bluetooth and infrared.

For email connectivity, the HTC Hermes supports Microsoft's DirectPush push e-mail solution, as well as BlackBerry services with applications provided by BlackBerry-partnered carriers.

The Hermes has two cameras. One 2.0 MP camera is on the back of the unit, and a VGA camera is on the front of the unit for video telephony on 3G networks. The 2 MP camera has a slide to switch between macro and micro shots, a flash for night shots, and a mirror for self-portraits. The camera button is on the bottom right side of the unit, so the phone is held like a typical digital camera while taking pictures. The camera can also be used to record video. Note that the Cingular 8525/8520 does not have the video telephony camera as video telephony is not supported in the US. The 8520 also does not have the second camera.

Versions

The Hermes has three different versions which are referred to as the HERM100, HERM200, and HERM300. Each version contains the same internal components, but each has a unique position for the buttons on the front face.

The HERM100 focuses all the keys around the centre D-Pad. The left soft key, Windows Start button, and the green call button are stacked to the left while the right soft key, OK button, and red call end button are stacked on the right of the D-Pad. This design has been criticized as being cramped[1]. All models, except the Cingular 8520 & 8525, have a video call button near the bottom left corner of the screen. Carriers/Models based on the HERM100 version include the Orange SPV M3100, Cingular/AT&T 8500 & 8525, Dopod 838Pro, i-mate JASJAM, O2 XDA Trion, and the Docomo Htc Z.

The HERM200 has larger buttons with keys more widely spaced. The two soft keys, the Windows Start key and OK key surround the D-Pad. The green call button and video call button are on the far left, and the red call end button is on the right. Carriers/Models based on the MER200 version include the Vodafone 1605 VPA COMPACT III, Qtek 9600, HTC TyTN, Dopod CHT9000, Vodafone Wireless PDA 1605, Swisscom XPA v1605, and the SoftBank X01HT.

The HERM300 is made exclusively for T-Mobile, and sold as the MDA Vario II. It uses a button scheme similar to the HERM100, but with the green call and red call end buttons swapped with the Windows Start and OK keys, respectively.

Operating System

The Hermes ships with Windows Mobile 5 AKU 2.3[2]. HTC has also released AKU3 ROMs to carriers, though it is up to the carrier to provide the update[3]. It has also been confirmed that HTC is working on a version of Windows Mobile 6, and several carriers have confirmed a late summer release for the Hermes[4]. As of May 3, 2007, Dopod International has announced that it plans to make available free updates to Windows Mobile 6 for selected devices, among the devices on the list is the TyTN-based 838Pro. It plans to start offering the upgrade program by July 2007.[5]
