Teabagging (also tea bagging) is a slang term for the act of a man placing his genitals, specifically the scrotum, in the mouth or face of another person, often in a repeated in-and-out motion.[1] It is said that the practice vaguely resembles dipping a tea bag into a cup of tea,[2][3][4][5] and can be combined with facesitting.

It is a relatively safe sexual act, and the risk of sexually transmitted diseases being spread as a result of teabagging is minimal.[5] However, along with other acts (such as the "turkey slap", in which the penis is used instead of the testicles) involving the placing of the genitals in the general face area, it is often done more for the purpose of humiliation and degradation than for sexual gratification, and in this way is distinct from oral sex in general.

The practice

The practice of teabagging can extend not only from dipping one's testicles into the mouth of another individual, but also to placing the scrotum into someone's eye sockets or nose, often as a punishment for their drunkenness, especially when carried out while the other person is unconscious. When carried out as a prank, it can be a crime as a form of sexual assault, which has led to at least one arrest.[6] A good example of such teabagging is shown in the movie Pecker by John Waters.[7]

It has also been reported as a practice in hazing[8] among athletic teams. This is described in an article by Robert DeKoven from Gay and Lesbian Times.[9]

One such story involved what school officials termed a hazing incident, which involved three varsity wrestlers and three coaches at ... High School near Chicago. The school suspended the wrestlers and coaches for a hazing incident that involved the “tea-bagging” of several freshman wrestlers. Cyd Zeigler Jr. reports that the incident occurred on a bus trip home last year on Dec. 1. ... According to the Daily Southtown, the three varsity wrestlers pulled freshmen, one by one, to the back of the bus. There, two of the boys held each boy down as the third boy shoved his testicles in the freshman’s face.

The variant term "turkey slap" refers to the act of a male slapping another person's face with his penis (the "turkey").[10] The turkey slap draws its name from the resemblance of the male's scrotum to the waddle under a turkey's neck. While the act of hitting another's face with the penis can be a sexual act, the term "turkey slap" refers to the act when performed in a non-sexual way either playfully or to shame, degrade or harass the victim. As with teabagging, the turkey slap can be a form of sexual assault if non-consensual, the most famous occurence of which took place during the reality television show Big Brother Australia 2006. There are numerous other slang terms for similar or related concepts to teabagging and turkey slapping, including windmilling,[11] helicoptering,[12] a fodunk,[citation needed] cockslap,[13] mushroom stamp[14] or piss bat.[15]

Big Brother Australia

Big Brother Australia 2006 was thrown into controversy when two housemates, Michael "Ashley" Cox and Michael "John" Bric were removed from the house after performing a turkey slap[18] on female housemate Camilla Halliwell.

The two men called Camilla to a bed, to which she agreed.[18] John then held Camilla down whilst Ashley performed the act.[18] Some have suggested that at the time of the act Camilla was in obvious distress and verbalised her objection[citation needed], however the footage[19] can be perceived to reflect[original research?] that Camilla was a willing participant until stating her objection, at which point the men released her. Later, Camilla stated to Big Brother (before the two men were removed) that she did not wish any action taken against Ashley and John. The act was seen as harmless and light in nature by the two males, however Ashley and John had broken Big Brother Australia rules and were later that day removed from the compound. Queensland Police looked into the matter, but felt the incident did not require further investigation.

After the housemates were informed of the removal of two of their fellow housemates, Camilla said, "I'm sorry" and agreed that "it was all in good fun". However, her apologies for the act inflicted upon her, and her agreement to its light-hearted nature, only came after her initial distress and verbalised objection at the time the act was actually performed. According to official Big Brother statements, this back-pedalling is seen as a common reaction of sexually harassed victims. She visited the house's counselor soon after.

Since the widespread publicity of this incident, a Big Brother Australia 2005 contestant, Rita Lazzarotto came forward alleging claims of similar misconduct.[20]

It has been suggested by various Australian media[citation needed] that the removal of the two offending housemates may have been a publicity stunt by the Big Brother producers.

On the July 6 2006 episode of the AFL Footy Show, the opening skit parodied the Big Brother incident, with Sam Newman depicted in the house, lying on a bed, with James Brayshaw. Newman exclaimed, "you're not going to turkey slap me are you?", at which point Brayshaw unleashed a frozen turkey and slapped Newman across the face. A skit on the July 7 2006 episode of The Chaser's War on Everything featured co-host Julian Morrow asking people what they thought of "turkey slapping," and then presented them with an actual frozen turkey to slap.[citation needed]

Video games

Teabagging has become a taunt in some multiplayer First-Person Shooter video games. Also known as "Corpse-Humping", the 'teabag' is performed by repeatedly crouching over the face of a deceased player to simulate the inserting of the scrotum into the dead player's mouth. Many games delay the re-spawning of a killed player for a few seconds after death, allowing ample time for the victor to use this aggravating technique to frustrate his or her opponent.[21][22]
