The Condemned is a thriller film directed and written by Scott Wiper, and starring former WWE wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Vinnie Jones, and Rick Hoffman. The fights are co-ordinated by Richard Norton, who also stunt doubles for Jones on some scenes. The movie was produced by WWE Films and released by Lions Gate Films.

The MPAA has given the film an "R" rating for pervasive strong brutal violence, and for language.

It was filmed on location in Queensland and Vancouver.

Plot

WWE superstar "Stone Cold" Steve Austin stars as a death row inmate who gets a rare second shot at life in director Scott Wiper's action thriller. Jack Conrad (Austin) is a dangerous convict currently awaiting execution in a corrupt Central American prison. "Purchased" by a wealthy television producer and transported to a deserted island, the formidable inmate is offered the opportunity to avoid capital punishment and win back his freedom by fighting to the death against nine other condemned criminals in an illegal game to be broadcast uncensored over the Internet.

Critical reaction

The critical response to the film was overwhelmingly negative. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 17% rating, registering thirteen "fresh" reviews out of 78,[1] while Meta Critic scored the film a 23 out of 100.[2] Complaints against The Condemned included accusations of plot holes, sexual objectification of the female characters, and massive amounts of violence untempered by comic relief, irony, or plot progression. On the contrary, Howard Stern noted on his Sirius radio show that the movie was a very good action film and was right up his alley.

The $4m USD-budgeted film failed at the box office, by most reasonable standards for such calculation. It debuted with a $3.8 million dollar opening weekend in the US. It lasted only 4 weeks in theaters and closed with a total of $7.4 million dollars.
