Dr Joel Stuart Hayward is a New Zealand academic of Jewish ethnicity specialising in Modern Military History and Defence, who became involved in a world wide Holocaust Revisionist controversy from 2000 - 2003 due to a Masters These he wrote in 1993 at Canterbury University titled "The Fate of Jews in German Hands: An Historical Enquiry into the Development and Significance of Holocaust Revisionism".[1] He argued that 'Holocaust revisionism' was a legitimate school of historical thought and provided a far more accurate record of what happened to European Jewry than the orthodox version. He concluded indirectly that homoicial gas chambers did not exist.
As a result a complaint was lodged by the New Zealand Jewish Council (NZC) in Dec 2000 and a working party convened by the University of Canterbury to investigate the circumstances under which the Masters was awarded. It concluded that although the thesis may have been misleading and hurtful it was nevertheless academically rigourous and should not be revoked.[2][3]
Since 1998 Hayward has sought to distance himself from his earlier activities due to extreme attacks on his personal and profession life.[4]
He is currently a tenured academic at the School of History, Philosophy and Politics at Massey University, NZ.
