Rotom (ロトム, Rotomu) is one of the Template:Pokenum fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Rotom in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.

Biological characteristics

Rotom seems to resemble a red sphere with a face similar to Castform's or Shuppet's; there is a single red spike (probably a lightning rod, considering its Electric type nature) on top of and a small red bump underneath its central body mass. Rotom is covered by a whitish-glow with two appendages shaped like lightning bolts, referring to the fact that Rotom's body is supposed to be made of plasma. Rotom are said to sneak into electrical appliances and short them out, this is reminiscent of it's name being motor spelled backwards (rather than making appliances run, it causes them to stop running or break down). This contributes to the fact that Rotom is found only after inspecting the TV at the old Chateau.

In the video games

Rotom is one of 107 new Pokémon that were introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Rotom can be found in the Old Chateau after receiving the National Dex by inspecting the TV at night. This unusual dwelling is reminiscient of the titular character of the movie poltergeist. Only one is found wild in the game, although it can breed with Ditto, which results in other Rotom. Rotom's battle music ("Battle! Legendary Pokémon") is the same as that of the legendary Pokémon Giratina, Heatran, Regigigas, and Darkrai, which makes it debatable whether or not to consider it a Legendary Pokémon.

Rotom is the first Pokémon with the type combination of Electric and Ghost. Its special ability is Levitate, which gives it an immunity to Ground-type attacks that would be super-effective against it otherwise, giving it the same advantage exclusively given to Zapdos (due to the latter's Flying-type) in the previous generations. This advantage can be critically valuable when battling Pokemon such as Aerodactyl, which wield Ground attacks but that take super-effective damage from electric ones.

Rotom's highest stat is Special Attack (closely followed by Speed), balanced out by poor Attack and Hit Point stats.

Rotom is obtained in the games by going into a secret manor called the Old Chateau, a forest mansion with several rooms, some of which containing human ghosts. The Pokémon is found inside a TV at night time. The player must have the National Pokédex in order to encounter Rotom.
