Transdev Yellow Buses is a bus operator in Bournemouth. It operates many routes, most with low floor buses. Some routes are in direct competition with another local operator, Wilts and Dorset.

The company was formerly owned and operated by Bournemouth Borough Council and was known as Yellow Buses Bournemouth. The name was changed when Transdev bought the company in December 2005. On 2 July 2006, Transdev Yellow Buses redesigned its entire network. It concentrated on core, higher frequency services, with a corresponding colour coded map, aimed at making the network easier for the public. In parallel, Transdev simplified its fare structure and introduced a new livery. This remains largely yellow (a condition of the sale), albeit in a lighter shade of primrose, rather than the more mustard of old. "The Brighter Bus Company" became the new strapline.Transdev's new network also provides a number of lower-frequency, non-core routes.

Major changes are being made on Sunday 22nd July 2007, which will affect many of the routes on which Transdev Yellow Buses run. Information on the changes has been made available on the website in a new Information Leaflet, the new printed timetable is now available and it will be available online shortly. These changes include:

  • More buses on route 1a (greater frequency of 10 minutes to 7.5 minutes), however, will terminate at Christchurch Civic Offices and not Sainsburys at Somerford.
  • Route 1c to use Belle Vue Road instead of Church Road, Harbour Road and Broadway, and also extended beyond Christchurch Civic Offices to serve Somerford Road, instead of the 1a and therefore the 1c will terminate at Sainsburys at Somerford.
  • More late afternoon buses on the Poole section of the 1b and 1c.
  • Routes 2 and 28a/b merged together to provide a 2a/2b/2c service, registered to run between Bournemouth Square and Kinson Library via Springbourne, Boscombe, Iford, Bournemouth Hospital and Castlepoint.
  • Buses every ten minutes (instead of every 15 minutes) on Route 3 between Castlepoint, Charminster and Bournemouth with most journeys extended to Westbourne, effecting the 3a/3b and 29 routes. To be numbered routes 3a (Westbourne to Iford), 3b (Westbourne to Boscombe) and the new 3c route, (Westbourne to Castlepoint). Buses will no longer serve Bournemouth Pier.
  • The shortening of Route 3a to run no further than Iford (passengers wishing to get to Fairmile and Christchurch Hospital would have to change to Wilts & Dorset's M2, 121 or 123 at Iford Roundabout or 123 at Bournemouth Hospital).
  • Routes 4a/4b - slightly retimed, continues on current route via the Lansdowne/station [not as previously publicised, via the bottom of Wimborne Road].
  • Route 5a/5b to have a general frequency between Bournemouth and Ensbury Park of every 6 minutes instead of the current 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Routes 6a/6b/6c to be retimed to allow the 6c to be extended beyond Tower Park to Canford Heath.
  • Route 25 to run between Boscombe and Slades Farm only (section of route between Slades Farm and Kinson on Route 25 withdrawn)
  • Route 26 - some retiming
  • Route 29 - deregistered, understood to be out to tender

History

With the passing of the Transport Act 1985 and subsequent deregulation and privatisation of bus services Yellow Buses Bournemouth became an arms-length commercial company, wholly owned by Bournemouth Borough Council. In spite of the sale of other municipal operators, the Conservative-controlled council decided to hold on to its operator for the time being. Following a change of council control to the Liberal Democrats, council financial pressures in the years to 2005, a perceived need to modernise the fleet and a realisation that full privatisation would better equip the operator to overcome the increasing competition it was facing from Wilts & Dorset, the council offered the company for sale.

The sale process was a difficult one but, after over 100 years of municipal operation, Bournemouth Borough Council sold Yellow Buses in December 2005 to Transdev. The Council retained 10 per cent of the shareholding and a member on the Transdev Yellow Buses board.

Routes as at 2 July 2006

Between 22 June and 1 July 2006, Transdev Yellow Buses held roadshows across Bournemouth, Poole & Christchurch to publicise its new network, livery, branding and new fare structure.

Also, for the first time in recent years, the company decided not to run services on New Years Day 2007 except route 747, which ran a normal Monday service.

This route list also includes changes that come into effect from Sunday 6th May 2007.

Tesco Services

These services are under contract and serve two different Tescos (Castle Lane, near Bournemouth Hospital and Tesco Ferndown). Transdev does not (and neither did Yellow Buses Bournemouth) publicise these services in any timetable or website. A contract change means that Shamrock Buses will be running these services from early 2007.

School Specials

Transdev Yellow Buses currently runs a number of school specials, some of which are under contract for LEAs other than Bournemouth.

Fleet

Transdev Yellow Buses has a mixture of different vehicle types, although an influx of second-hand super low floor single decks coincided with the network changes in July 2006. These have not been seen however, with Transdev using too many older buses which have broken down too often in the last few years making passengers feel annoyed and unsafe.

Pre 1986

Mainly Daimler/Leyland Fleetline (most of which had unusual Alexander AL type bodies as opposed to the AD type), Leyland Atlanteans, and Leyland Olympians were in the fleet up to and at the mid-1980s. Some of the Daimler/Leyland Fleetlines were convertible open-top buses for what was once an extensive summer service.

1986

Five Volvo Citybuses, five with East Lancs coach-style bodywork were purchased. They spent much of their time in what was then the coaching division of the Yellows..."Yellow Coaches of Bournemouth". They eventually made their way to the Yellow Buses fleet and into regular service.

1988/1989

10 Volvo Citybuses with Alexander RV-type bodies were bought, five in 1988 and a further five in 1989.

1990/1991/1992

18 Dennis Dominators with East Lancs E-type bodies (built to Alexander R-type design) were purchased, and have turbo-charged Gardner 6LXCT engines: seven in 1990, seven in 1991 and four in 1992.

1993

Six East Lancs EL2000-bodied Dennis Lances were bought.

1995/1996

In 1995/6, a large batch of Dennis Darts with East Lancs EL2000 bodywork were purchased, and are worth noting as the bodies are wider than usual Darts (regardless of bodywork): 12 in 1995 (fleet numbers 451 to 462 inclusive) and 10 in 1996 (fleet numbers 463 to 472 inclusive)

1997/1998

In 1997-8, delivery of Dennis Dart SLFs with East Lancs Spryte bodywork: two in 1997 and eight in 1998. The 1998 batch were originally in "Super Route 6" livery.

1999

Yellow Buses took delivery of its first-ever new double decks since 1992, being nine East Lancs Lolyne-bodied Tridents.

2001

Eight East Lancs Vyking-bodied Volvo B7TLs arrived.

2002

Delivered were another eight East Lancs Vyking-bodied Volvo B7TLs, three of which have are convertible to open top format.

Fleet no. 253, one of the 18 Dennis Dominator/East Lancs E-Types was taken out of service after a fire while on a morning 31 service to Purewell, at a time England faced Brazil in the World Cup and lost. It was cannibalised for spares for the remaining Dennis Dominators.

2003

Yellow Buses took delivery six Volvo B7TLs, the bodywork of which were split equally between East Lancs Vyking and Wright Eclipse Gemini.

Again, this year also saw another one of the original 18 Dennis Dominator East Lancs/E-Types taken out of service after another, more serious fire, completely destroyed no. 255.

The company withdrew all six East Lancs EL2000-bodied Dennis Lances. Four were sold and the remaining two (nos. 402 and 406) became driver training vehicles. Also a few Leyland Fleetlines were sold to Thamesdown.

2004

The only deliveries were a further six further Volvo B7TLs, bodied this time with East Lancs Myllennium bodywork.

Also a few Leyland Fleetlines were sold to Thamesdown.

2005

A further three East Lancs Myllennium B7TLs arrived, plus four VDL SB120/Wright Merits, the latter in a revised livery (before the sale to Transdev) of yellow and white relieved with two blue upward sweeping bands to the rear.

Also a few Leyland Fleetlines were sold to Thamesdown.

2006

Under Transdev ownership, a selection of 21 second-hand single decks arrived, all of which were low-floor Darts on either Plaxton Pointer (three buses), East Lancs Spryte (10) or Wrightbus Crusader bodies (eight), all in the new Transdev Yellow Buses livery.

The three remaining Leyland Fleetline, Dennis Dominator and East Lancs coach-style Citybuses (originally brought in 1986 for the now defunct coaching division known as Yellow Coaches) were withdrawn for sale. The Alexander Citybuses are now only used for school specials and contract services, but will occasionally undertake some 'normal' bus duties. No. 207 (formerly the United Taxis all-over advert bus) was the only Alexander Citybus to receive the new livery, at this time.

2007

The company commenced repainting the remainder of the Citybuses, even though their future with the company remains in some doubt, as the company expects more second hand acquisitions to replace the non-low floor fleet. Fleet no. 212 was the next Citybus to have received the new livery, and Citybus 214 has now been repainted.

Previous Yellow Buses Services (Pre Transdev)

The bus network has seen many changes over the years. Some route numbers, for example, have been reused several times.

  • 1: Bournemouth Square - Somerford via Boscombe, Pokesdown, Iford, Jumpers Corner and Christchurch
This was the original version of Route 20.
This was replaced by Route 20.
  • A1: Bournemouth Triangle - Bournemouth Airport via Wessex Way, Travel Interchange, Wessex Way
Originally, this service when it first started ran between Bournemouth Triangle/Square and Bournemouth Airport via Travel Interchange, Winton, Moordown & Parley Cross, however, it was chosen to make the route a more express one. This was renumbered to route 747 in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006.
  • w1: Bournemouth Square - Somerford via Boscombe, Pokesdown, Fisherman's Walk, Southbourne, Christchurch, and Purewell
This service was started on the 14th December 1993 in competition with Bournemouth Routemaster's 608 service. This service was run by Yellow Buses subsidiary "White Buses". This service was withdrawn on 13th June 1994 in favour of increasing frequencies on Yellow Buses routes 20 and 23.
  • 2 This service ran from the Square via the Lansdowne, Cemetery Junction and Winton from where it ran via Withermoor Road and Victoria Avenue. It then passed through Ensbury Park and along Redhill Drive, terminating near the Wimborne Road. It was withdrawn in the late 1970s and after a suggestion in a letter to the local newspaper partly replaced by diverting some Wilts and Dorset Bournemouth - Ringwood buses from the Moordown section of the route.
  • w2: Bournemouth Square - Somerford via Boscombe, Pokesdown, Fisherman's Walk, Christchurch and Purewell
This service was started when Bournemouth Routemaster started their operations in Bournemouth in 1993. This service ran the same route as Bournemouth Routemaster's 607 service. This service was run by Yellow Buses subsidiary "White Buses". This service was withdrawn on 13th June 1994 in favour of increasing frequencies on Yellow Buses routes 20 and 23.
  • 3/4: Bournemouth Pier/Square - Bear Cross/Wood via Travel Interchange, Winton, Moordown (Route 4 also via Kinson Park Road) and Kinson
These saw a few changes in its day, especially to the day to day running of route 4 on Sundays & Evenings. Originally, route 4 on Sundays and Evenings would run between Bournemouth & Kinson, then linking to route 6 back to Bournemouth Square. Eventually, route 4 was axed on Sundays when route 9 started to run in the evenings.
Route 3/4 was replaced by route 4a in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006, with the Kinson Park Road section of route 4 not being served.
  • w3: Bournemouth Square - Bear Wood via Rail Station, Winton, Moordown, Kinson and Bear Cross
This service was started when Bournemouth Routemaster started their operations in Bournemouth in 1993. This service ran the same route as Bournemouth Routemaster's 605 service. This service was run by Yellow Buses subsidiary "White Buses". This service was withdrawn shortly after Bournemouth Routemaster finished their operations in Bournemouth in August 1994.
  • X3: Bearwood - Bournemouth Travel Interchange via Kinson, Redhill, Ensbury Park, Triangle & Square and Lansdowne. LIMITED STOP SERVICE
This service only had one journey in one direction. This service was eventually withdrawn when route 3 & 4 was changed from an every 20-minute service (combined) to an every 30-minute service (combined).
  • 4: Bournemouth Square - Malvern Road via Rail Station & Kings Road
This service used to turn in Malvern Road and Charminster Avenue near St Walburga's School. At times it was extended to Bournemouth Pier.
  • 5: Bournemouth Pier/Square - Moore Avenue/Kinson via Travel Interchange, Winton, Ensbury Park
Originally, this service ran between Bournemouth Square and Moore Avenue. Eventually, Evening & Sundays services were extended to serve Kinson, until the point where it went to Kinson all the time.
Replaced by Route 5a in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006 and diverted to serve Richmond Arms instead of East Avenue Roundabout.
  • 5A: Bournemouth Pier/Square - Moore Avenue via Madeira Road, Travel Interchange, Winton, Ensbury Park
A variation of Route 5, this ran 3 journeys in each direction during Mondays to Fridays replacing 3 Route 5 journeys in each direction. This ran for about 2 years and then was re-merged back into Route 5.
  • 6: Bournemouth Pier/Square - Kinson via Travel Interchange, Charminster, Winton, Ensbury Park
This service was given a re-launch as SUPER ROUTE 6 when the company invested in some more single deck low floor buses 1998 along with a Real Time System for the route.
Replaced by Route 5b in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006.
  • w6: Bournemouth Square - Cunningham Cresent via Rail Station, Winton, Ensbury Park and Kinson
This service was started when Bournemouth Routemaster started their operations in Bournemouth in 1993. This service ran the same route as Bournemouth Routemaster's 604 service. Service w6 was run by Yellow Buses subsidiary "White Buses". This service was withdrawn shortly after Bournemouth Routemaster finished their operations in Bournemouth in August 1994.
  • 7: Boscombe - Kinson/Francis Avenue/Cunningham Crescent via Royal Victoria Hospital, Queens Park, Charminster, Winton, Victoria Road & Ensbury Park
  • 7: Boscombe - Bournemouth Hospital - Kinson via Pokesdown, Castlepoint, Moordown, Ensbury Park
This has now been replaced by Route 28a in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006 and extended beyond Boscombe to Bournemouth via Bournemouth Railway Station.
  • 8: Boscombe - Kinson via Royal Victoria Hospital, Queens Park, Charminster, Winton, Ensbury Park & Cunningham Crescent
  • 8: Bournemouth Square - Kinson via Travel Interchange, Winton, Wallisdown & Kinson Road
  • 8: Boscombe - Bournemouth Hospital - Kinson via Pokesdown, Castlepoint, Moordown, Ensbury Park
This was introduced to make route 7 a combined every 30 min frequency. This has now been replaced by Route 28b in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006 and extended beyond Boscombe to Bournemouth via Bournemouth Railway Station.
  • X8: Bournemouth Square - Bournemouth Airport
This was the original version of the A1, but was not used enough, so it was axed, but was resurrected in the form of Route A1 when that started. This bus had a dedicated bus allocated to it, fleet number 153 (ERU 153V - Leyland Fleetline) painted up in Bournemouth Airport Airbus colours.
  • 9: Bournemouth Pier/Square - Bear Cross via Travel Interchange, Winton, Wallisdown, Knighton Heath Road
Originally ran from Bournemouth Triangle to Bear Cross via Richmond Hill, Winton, Wallisdown & Knighton Heath Road, but was re-routed to serve the Travel Interchange and terminate at Bournemouth Square when route 9A was axed. With this, along with Route 69, Yellow Buses set up an every 30 minute frequency between Mountbatten Arms and Bournemouth Square via Wallisdown, Winton and Travel Interchange which followed the same route during Mondays to Saturdays Daytimes.
Replaced by Route 6b in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006. Now only used by a single decker bus which is proven to be too over crowded and lacks disabled access causing much destress to passengers who formally used route 9.
  • 9A: Bournemouth Pier/Square - Bear Cross via Travel Interchange, Winton, Wallisdown & Knighton Heath Road
A route which ran on the Evening, Sunday and Bank Holiday timetable to maintain a connection through the station to the Talbot Campus of the University and Wallisdown. It was needed as the 69 route did not run at these times. This route is desperately needed again.
  • 10: Tuckton Bridge - Kinson via Southbourne, Fisherman's Walk, Shelley Park, Southcote Road, Rail Station, Lansdowne, Bournemouth Square, Glenferness Avenue, Wallisdown, Turbary Park & Cunningham Cresent
This was the original version of Route 10. In the 90's, it was shortened to run between Bournemouth Triangle - Kinson via Glenferness Avenue, Wallisdown & Turbary Park, thus withdrawing the section of route between Bournemouth and Tuckton Bridge.
Replaced by Route 6a between Bournemouth Square and Kinson, but runs via Travel Interchange & Winton and not Glenferness Avenue. The section of route between Bournemouth Triangle and Talbot Roundabout via Glenferness Avenue is replaced by Route 37 after Bournemouth Council stepped in.
  • 11: Chines & Pines Circular Tour (Summer Only/Open Top Route)
This service was taken over from Christchurch Buses. This service used Vintage Yellow Buses.
  • 11: The Original Bournemouth Tour (Summer Only/Open Top Route)
45 Minute tour of the area using Vintage Yellow Buses. This was withdrawn and replaced by the Chines & Pines Circular Tour when Christchurch Buses (a Yellow Buses subsidary) stop running its Chines & Pines tour.
  • 11: Sandbanks - Christchurch Quay via Lilliput, Compton Acres, Canford Cliffs, Branksome Chine, Alum Chine, Westbourne, Bournemouth Triangle/Square/Pier, Boscombe, Boscombe Pier, Southbourne and Tuckton Bridge (Summer Only/Coastal Service/Open Top Route)
Originally this service only ran between Bournemouth Pier and Christchurch Quay, but was extended after time beyond Bournemouth Pier to Sandbanks.
This service ran hourly, but with Route 12, provided a 30 minute overall frequency between Sandbanks and Southbourne. Eventually, it was decided to merge this route into Route 12
  • 12: Sandbanks - Christchurch Civic Offices (Summer Only/Coastal Service/Open Top Route)
This service over its life-time has seen lots of changes. Originally running between Hengistbury Head and Alum Chine, this route did very well. After many years, it was extended beyond Alum Chine to Sandbanks, and thus it provided (in conjuction with Route 11) a 30 minute overall frequency between Sandbanks and Southbourne.
Eventually, it was decided to merge Routes 11 & 12 together to make a new Route 12 covering Sandbanks to Christchurch Quay via Lilliput, Compton Acres, Canford Cliffs, The Chines, The Piers (including Bournemouth Town Centre), Southbourne, Hengistbury Head and Tuckton Bridge.
LOW SUMMER TIME: Ran between Sandbanks Ferry and Christchurch Quay every hour.
HIGH SUMMER TIME: It ran every 30 minutes using the fleet of convertible Daimler/Leyland Fleetlines. This ran for many years until in 2002, when it was decided to start playing around with the service, in that there would be 2 buses and hour between Alum Chine and Christchurch Quay with one an hour extending to Sandbanks. 2002 also saw 3 new Volvo B7TL ELC Vyking Convertible open toppers arrive, however, only 431 (which was in the Centenary Livery) was used that year, and the rest of the open-toppers were made up of fleetlines. The following year, the service was restored back to its original every 30minutes between Sandbanks and Christchurch Quay, and also saw all 3 Volvo B7TL ELC Vyking Convertibles used with the rest made up of Convertible Fleetlines again.
In 2004 however, everything suddenly changed when the company decided to start selling their Convertible Fleetlines (except for 138 and 140), which saw Route 12's frequency of service reduced to every hour for the whole Low & High Summer Season. Also, it was decided that Route 12 would no longer serve Alum Chine after the year before's incident with the Alum Chine car park traffic jam all along Alumhurst Road.
In 2005, the route was restore back to serve Alum Chine, however, the service was diverted away from Christchurch Quay to serve Christchurch High Street and Christchurch Civic Offices, but remained an hourly service.
In 2006, the route was changed between Bournemouth and Christchurch in that the section of route between Boscombe Gardens and Christchurch was withdrawn and was diverted to serve Bournemouth Railway Station.
Now its 2007 and it has been restored back to its 2005 route, however, now running every 90 minutes and not every hour.
Who knows what will happen in 2008.
  • 15: Chines & Pines Circular Tour (Summer Only/Open Top Route)
This service was originally operated by Christchurch Buses (a bit like White Buses, it was a subsidiary of Yellow Buses). Eventually, it was withdrawn and given to Vintage Yellow Buses (another Yellow Buses subsidiary) to operate it, to which it was re-numbered to Route 11.

This service used to link to and from route 33/34 at Muscliffe. Also, route 18 in the last year of it running was diverted away from Bournemouth Pier to assist in its running time.
This service was withdrawn when it was decided to run a full circuit of Routes 33/34 on Evenings and Sundays.
  • 19 Bournemouth Square - Bourne Valley
This short route ran up the Bourne Avenue and Branksome Wood Road, involving diversions via Prince of Wales and Surrey Roads, to terminate below the railway viaducts near Coy Pond. The service was withdrawn in the late 1970's.
  • 19: Bournemouth Square - Kinson via Glenferness Avenue, Winton & Wallisdown
This route started in 1984 as a Sunday combination of the 9 and 10 routes of the time. It was abandoned in favour of running the 4/9 through fares route on Sundays.
  • 20: Bournemouth Triangle/Square - Somerford Sainsbury's via Boscombe, Iford & Christchurch
Originally started at Westbourne, but that section of the route was later transferred to route 22 for a period of time until that section was axed.
Replaced by Route 1a in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006.
  • 21: Bournemouth Pier/Square - Somerford Sainsbury's via Boscombe, Fisherman's Walk, Southbourne Cross Roads, Tuckton Bridge, Kings Avenue, Christchurch and Somerford Estate
Was introduced when route 25 was axed in 2001. This replaced one of the route 22 journeys an hour during the daytime Monday to Saturday and ran the exact same route as the 22, however it also served Kings Avenue. Eventually, route 21 journeys were returned back to route 22 journey's and the Kings Avenue section of route then became part of route 68.
  • 22: Poole - Somerford Sainsbury's via Poole Hospital, Ashley Cross, Penn Hill, Westbourne, Bournemouth Triangle/Square, Boscombe, Fisherman's Walk, Southbourne Cross Roads, Tuckton Bridge, Christchurch and Somerford Estate
This service has seen many changes. It originally ran between Bournemouth Square and Somerford but was extended to serve Westbourne when route 20 was shortened to terminate at the Square, however, soon after, route 22 was shortened back to Bournemouth Square. Then, in a strange twist of events, route 22 after 18.30 each day would not go any further than Tuckton, and then eventually, route 22 wouldn't go any further than Christchurch on Sundays until 18.30 when it would not go any further than Tuckton, leaving out Somerford Estate and Somerford. Then in August 2005, Wilts & Dorset opted to drop route 101 from their services, so the Yellows took route 101 over then shortly after, it was merged into route 22, therefore extended Route 22 beyond Bournemouth Square, and the 6 Volvo B7TL ELC Myllennium Vykings were given Route 22 brandings and were thus allocated to the route. In December 2005, Transdev brought the company, and the decision was made to removed the brandings from the 6 Volvo B7TL ELC Myllennium Vykings. In July 2006, the big network changed the route this bus took, and instead was rerouted to run via Upper Parkstone and Sea View, and were renumbered 1c. However, Roadliner have created a link between Penn Hill and Upper Parkstone with their new Route 8, thus still giving passengers a link to Bournemouth & Poole & Christchurch, albeit not a direct service, and Wilts & Dorset still run Route 150 between Bournemouth & Penn Hill.
Replaced by Route 1c in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006.
  • X22: Bournemouth Square - Highcliffe Sea Corner via Wessex Way, Fairmile, Christchurch & Somerford Estate. LIMITED STOP SERVICE
Originally ran between Bournemouth Square and Somerford (Sainsbury's), but when Route 31/32 were extended to Somerford/Highcliffe, route X22 was extended to serve Highcliffe, but would not serve Somerford Sainsbury's as a result. This service was withdrawn in July 2006.

During the last few years on route 23, it was shortened to terminate at Tuckton Bridge after 18.30 each day.

This route originally only ran between Westbourne and Boscombe, but was then extended to Christchurch.
This service (along with route 16/16A) were the 1st routes in Yellow Buses to see Low Floor Buses. Evenings and Sunday journeys on Route 25 only ran between Westbourne and Boscombe Bus Station. Unfortunately, in 2001, this service was axed and the Kings Avenue section of the route was given to the NEW service, route 21.

This service originally linked into Route 7 at Kinson. When Route 28 was withdrawn in January 2001, Route 27 linked to Route 7 at Kinson.
  • 29: Boscombe - Poole Rail Station/Poole Quay via Winton, Wallisdown (including Fern Barrow), Alderney, Poole Hospital
This service was originally introduced to replace one of the Route 30 buses every hour. The idea was to have Route 29 serve Fern Barrow every hour, and have Route 30 not serve Fern Barrow, thus still providing a 30 minute frequency on most of the route. After a year, Route 29 was re-merged back into Route 30, and with that Route 30 started serving Fern Barrow every 30mins yet again.
  • 30: Boscombe - Poole Bus Station via Winton, Wallisdown (including Fern Barrow), Alderney, Poole Hospital
Oddly enough, this was the original route that service 30 took when it first started with a 30 minute frequency. After that came a series of changes to the service. The service was changed at the Poole end, from Poole Hospital it would go to Poole Railway Station, then continue onto Poole Quay, instead of serve Poole Bus Station. Then, the option was taken to extend the service the at the other end, therefore extending the service beyond Boscombe Bus Station to Boscombe Pier. Then, Condor Ferries funded for the extension of some buses beyond Poole Quay to serve the Poole Ferry Terminal. This lasted for a few years until Condor Ferries withdrew funding, and the service was reset to terminate at Poole Quay once more. Then, Route 29 was introduced to replace one bus an hour on Route 30. The idea was to allow Route 30 not to serve Fern Barrow, and just to have Route 29 serve Fern Barrow every hour. Also during that time, the service was shortened at the Boscombe end, thus making Boscombe Bus Station the terminating spot once more. After a year, Route 29 was merged back into Route 30, and route 30 started to serve Fern Barrow every half hour once again. The last change to Route 30 was to have it put back to its original route, thus it terminated at Poole Bus Station once more. However, with this change, one bus per hour on Route 30 was replaced by Route 40, which ran the same route between Winton Banks and Poole via Fern Barrow as Route 30, but Route 40 started at Castlepoint. This brought to an end the 30 minute frequency of Route 30 between Winton Banks and Boscombe. Service 30 was financially supported by The Borough of Poole.
In the Network Change of July 2nd 2006, Route 30 was replaced by Route 26, but Route 40 was withdrawn, and the option was taken to keep Route 26 every hour as Route 30 was previously.

Originally, this service only ran between Bournemouth and Jumpers Corner. It was some time before it was extended to serve Fairmile, Christchurch and Purewell. This set-up ran for some time until the decision was made to have the 68 extend to Purewell and the 32 terminate at Christchurch Civic Offices. Of course, this lasted a few months as the route was then re-extended back to Purewell, but also further extended to serve Mudeford and Highcliffe.
This service was replaced by Route 3a in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006, which only runs between Bournemouth and Christchurch.

This route originally only ran between Alderney and Boscombe, but was then extended to Christchurch. Then, Kings Avenue became part of the route when the 21 was axed, then the route was extended to Purewell from Christchurch after the 31 was shortended to terminate at Christchurch and not Purewell.
This service traditionally linked to route 69 at Alderney. In the network change of 2 July 2006, only parts of the service were replaced by many routes. The section between Pokesdown and Bournemouth Triangle was replaced by route 28a/b in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006, and the sections of route between Purewell and Boscombe and also Lansdowne and Sea View was replaced by route 1b/c in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006..
  • 69: Alderney - Bournemouth Pier/Square via Wallisdown, Winton & Travel Interchange
This service traditionally linked to route 68 at Alderney. When Route 9 was re-routed, Yellow Buses set up an every 30 minute frequency between Mountbatten Arms and Bournemouth Square via Wallisdown, Winton and Travel Interchange which followed the same route during Mondays to Saturdays Daytimes. When the 2 July 2006 Network Change came into force, this bus was re-routed between Wallisdown Roundabout and Alderney to run via Alder Hills, and also received an extension to serve Tower Park. It is now renumbered as Route 6c in the Network Change of July 2nd 2006. In a way, this also brings part of the old route 70 back into force what with the service running between Bournemouth and Tower Park.

This was run in conjunction with route 26 and to provide a new link to Tower Park by the Yellows, but was rather short-lived.

Controversy

Since Transdev took over Yellow Buses in 2005, there has been some controversy which has been reported by the Daily Echo. Some people say that they are having a harder time getting buses, having to walk longer distances to walk to bus stops and are not happy about some old and overcrowded buses being used.

There has however been a 20% increase in passenger numbers and many have welcomed the simlified route network and fare system, new high frequency extended services, improved bus stop flags and timetables, cheaper promotional tickets and the fleet of mostly modern low floor vehicles.

In some areas buses services were withdrawn due to lack of demand and have been replaced by more popular and profitable routes such as those to Poole. Whilst this has left some people in neglected areas unhappy it has enabled the company to focus it's resources on providing a more popular efficient service for the majority.

Bournemouth Town Centre Re-Routing

In September 2002, Yellow Buses decided to use Old Christchurch Road for most outbound journeys, but use Bath Road for inbound journeys. Buses in both directions in the evenings and on Sundays, however, used Bath Road. The poster to the right illustrates the changes. Services unaffected by this re-routing were 22 and 69, which used Hinton Road & Bath Road all day, every day.

Some years later, Yellow Buses decided to change some town centre routing further. This managed to confuse some of its drivers. It included buses towards Lansdowne operating via Old Christchurch Road each day (except for routes 22 and 69, as above), including Sundays, and then all buses towards Lansdowne using Hinton Road & Bath Road after 1800 hrs.

During both these periods outbound Charminster Road Buses (31/32/35) avoided Old Christchurch Road on evenings and Sundays by using the Bourne Avenue side of the Square.

This was changed slightly again when Transdev took over at Yellow Buses, so that all buses towards Lansdowne before 1800 hrs now operate without exception via Old Christchurch Road.
