Jalaluddin Umri
Sayyid Jalaluddin Umri (Urdu: جلال الدین عمری Arabic: جلال الدین العمری(Born in 1935) also known as Mawlana (Maulana) Sayyid Jalaluddin Ansar Umri is a popular Islamic thinker, writer and Islamist leader of India. He has written many books on a wide range of topics pertaining to Islam1. He is considered expert in Islamic family system and women related issues.
Early life
Jalaluddin Umri was born in Village Puttagram, District-North Arcot, Tamil Nadu in India2. He graduated form Jamia Darus-Salam of Umrabad in TamilnaduIndia, in 1954. Later he completed Munshi and Fazil courses of Madras University. Maulana Umri completed his B.A. in English Literature from Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh. India. After graduating from Umrabad, he got associated with the Research and writing department of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. Later he got associated with Idara-e-Tahqeeq wa Tasneef-e-Islami (Islamic Research Institute) as its founder Secretary.3
Association with Jamaat-e-Islami Hind
Umri got associated with Jamaat-e-Islami Hind during his student days. He became associated with its Research department soon after his studies. He served as Local Ameer of Jamaat in Aligarh for 10 years. He also served as the Editor of Jamaat’s organ Zindagi-e-Nau. Later he was appointed Deputy Ameer of Jamaat in 1991 and became its Ameer (Chief) in 2007.4
Socio-Political Activism
Umri has been associated actively with many social religious and political oganisations in India in pursuit of the policies of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. He is holding following offices other than being the Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. 1. Founder member of All India Muslim Personal Board, a federation of Muslim organisations in India.5 2. Chairman Idara-e-Tahqeeq wa Tasneef-e-Islami Aligarh, an islamic Research Institute, and Editor of its journal Tahqeeqat-e-Islami.6 3. Chancellor Jamaiat-ul-Falah an Islamic University based in northern India7
Academic Activities and Selected works
Umri is a prolific writer in Urdu language and has produced over 32 books. Some of his books have been translated in Arabic, English, Turkish, Hindi, Telugu, Bangla, Tamil and Kannada languages.
