Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations
- This page is for requests to usurp accounts that already exist. If you want your account renamed to a name that is not already taken, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
This page permits users to request, and bureaucrats to consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames. This consists of renaming an existing dormant account in order to permit another user to adopt the name.
If you wish to request usurpation, please read carefully the "Instructions" section below. Malformed requests waste other users' time, and may not be fulfillable. Be advised, in particular, that the account you want to usurp must have no edits or log entries (except in the username creation log) to qualify for usurpation.
Please do not request usurpation if your user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.
Instructions
Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure that the process runs efficiently. Malformed requests waste other users' time.
- Be sure the account you wish to usurp has no edits or log entries (except in the account creation log).
- Ensure that it meets the changing usernames guidelines.
- Log in to your present account.
- Leave a message on the talk page of the target account (preferably of the form {{subst:usurpation requested}} ~~~~) notifying the user of your request.
- Please do not e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a bureaucrat or other designated user will do it.
- Add your request to this page using the proper template. This may be done via a shortcut (1) or by the traditional method (2):
- (1) The shortcut: Click this link. Replace "Name_To_Usurp" with the username you wish to usurp, and "Current_Name" with your current username. You may include some reason for the change beneath the template if you wish. Leave the "Subject/headline" field blank.
- (2) The traditional method: Click "edit this page"; find the section for today's date; copy the following text and paste it at the bottom of that section.
{{subst:usurp|Name_To_Usurp|Current_Name}} ~~~~
- Replace "Name_To_Usurp" with the username you wish to usurp, and "Current_Name" with your current username. You may include some reason for the change beneath the template if you wish.
Check your spelling and click "Save page".
Your request is now complete and ready to be processed. If the owner of the target account does not object within seven days, a bureaucrat will fulfill your request. Mark the date, so you will not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.
A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully. Bureaucrats, see Wikipedia:Bureaucrats for instructions for processing these requests.

Jack ← Jackrm
- Current username: Jackrm (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
- Target username: Jack (talk · contribs · global contribs · logs · block log)
- Datestamp: 09:42, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- For bureaucrat use: Email target username (1) (2)
- Reason: Jack has no edits, and redirects to a user which is completely different to it. Therefore I feel this username can be fairly usurped, as it makes my own name simpler, and the current user of the username Jack has made no edits. Thankyou, — jacĸrм (talk) 09:42, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Note:
- The target username meets the requirements for usurpation.
- The current owner of the target username does not have an email address specified. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 10:20, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Could I just ask what I should do if I do acquire this username, as User:Jack links to another user, should I simply remove the redirect or inform the user whom it redirects to or what? Thanks, — jacĸrм (talk) 18:20, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Its probably best to tell the user then remove the redirect, because this request is valid that link would be rightfully yours. Qst 18:37, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hmm this might be another case for that template AD created. --Chris G 09:06, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Which template? — jacĸrм (talk) 00:12, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- I'm happy to delete the redirect at User:Jack, provided someone changes all the links to the page currently (given Special:Whatlinkshere/User:Jack) to links to User:Jeandré du Toit. There's only 44, and that includes one of the links from this page. --Deskana (talk) 02:08, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

- Target username: Pi (talk · contribs · global contribs · logs · block log)

- Reason : Space in current name is confusing.

Trey ← TREYWiki
- Current username: TREYWiki (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
- Target username: Trey (talk · contribs · global contribs · logs · block log)
- Datestamp: 21:47, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- For bureaucrat use: Email target username (1) (2)
- Personal Preference. I want to ditch the "Wiki" part of my username. I know this user has edits and might not make the criteria. Those edits were back in 2003 and only to its own userpage. —treyomg he's back 21:47, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- Note: This is not for block log evasion, as brought up on IRC. A link to my previous blocklog could be provided in the new block log. —treyomg he's back 21:49, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- Note
- As this account has made 6 edits, it does not meet the standard requirements for usurpation. Given the latest of those edits was in May 2004 and all were to the account's own userspace, there are no GFDL or other issues with this request. A bureaucrat may therefore be willing to perform the request as a matter of discretion.
- The target username has no deleted edits logged.
- The current owner of the username has been notified of this usurpation request.
- The current owner of this username does not have an email address specified.

Pallida Mors 76 21:52, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
Motives: I tried to create the target account, but somehow was unable to finish the process. I got a new account when the old one showed unaccessible. I didn't know what else to do at that time. I'm aware of the fact that I'm a relatively new user, but both accounts should have my data. Sincerely, Pallida Mors 76 21:52, 4 November 2007 (UTC).

Kimchi.sg ← Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh
- Current username: Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh (talk · contribs · logs · block log)

I wish to usurp an account that I already control, even though it has 3 edits. The last time I brought this up it was declined, so for the past year I had to use alternate accounts in order to have a "shorter" username. This has led to some misunderstanding so I'd like to ask again whether my Kimchi.sg and A.J.M.S. accounts can be swapped. (I.e, rename current Kimchi.sg to Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh and the old Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh to Kimchi.sg.) Thanks in advance. Resurgent insurgent 07:51, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
- If they're all the same person anyhow, as I understand it, you just want an account, with a shorter name to have the bits... What about getting a steward to swap bits? SQLQuery me! 07:31, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- That would be okay - I don't mind contribs/log entries getting split again (they've been split many times now), but I don't know if it's possible. Could a 'crat enlighten us on the feasibility? Other than that, it's just a mater of asking MediaWiki to reset the password for the Kimchi.sg account (I've forgotten it, but it has working email). Resurgent insurgent 11:38, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
