Debra Barone

Debra Louise Barone (née Whelan) is a fictional character from the American TV sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. She is played by actress Patricia Heaton. On the show, Debra lives on Long Island, with her husband, Ray Barone (Ray Romano), and their children, Geoffrey, Michael, and Ally (Sawyer, Sullivan and Madylin Sweeten respectively). As between Debra and Ray, Debra is represented as the wiser, maturer, and more responsible one, who’s generally in the right. Debra manages the household and cares for the children. Debra is frequently stressed out. This is because she not only has to deal with all the housework and her three rambunctious children (without much assistance from Ray), but also Ray's obnoxious, intrusive family members. For these reasons, Debra is somewhat justified in being the person she is. She's a moody character, who tends to hold back her feelings and then makes the mistake of letting them out by having tantrums and completely losing control of herself. If she isnt upset with Ray and constantly nagging him, she’s complaining to Ray about his family.

Debra was brought up by her loving, caring, and rich parents. Debra is occasionally visited by her mother, Lois (Katherine Helmond), and her father, Warren (Robert Culp). Warren and Lois have traveled throughout the world since Debra moved away. Debra's parents experienced a lot of marital troubles and received counseling for it, but eventually divorced anyway.

After learning she was pregnant with twins, Debra brought up the issue that she and Ray would need to move in a bigger home, as they would now have three children. Once Ray's parents learned of this, Frank showed the married couple a nice home across the street from two lovely neighbors, who just happened to be Marie and Frank themselves. Ray was terrified at the idea of moving across the street from his parents. Debra was able to convince him to do so, but she soon regretted it.

Debra often finds herself complaining to Ray about his family, even though she doesn't have much of a problem with Robert, and to a lesser extent, not even Frank. She mainly complains about all of them because of his mother, Marie Barone. In fact, most of her complaints are about Marie because of Marie's intrusive and borderline insulting behavior towards Debra. Marie often barges into Debra's home insinuating how bad a housewife and homemaker she is. Most of Marie's nasty insinuations are aimed at Debra's cooking. Marie has always been a world class cook and Debra is notorious for making lousy food, making it that much worse for Debra. Other things Marie criticizes are Debra's parental skills and housekeeping. Marie often rewashes the dishes and spends her days cleaning Debra's house directly after Debra has done it.

As far as her marriage goes with Ray, one thing that it is hard to get out of Debra is sex. Ray is frequently seen trying to get his wife to have sex with him, but is almost always rejected by Debra. Rather, Debra is often seen reading a book, just before going to sleep. Also before going to sleep, she's often seen having a lengthy interaction with Ray. Debra is active in the school PTA. In spite of her blaming and taking everything out on Ray and gossipy way of complaining about his family, Debra really does love her whole family. Debra once defended Ray when he was "being beat up by the Cookie Lady", Peggy (Amy Aquino), letting her know that she's the only one who gets to mess with Ray. Debra and Marie are also known to take each other's sides when the family is having a big argument. Debra is very caring mother, but a nagging housewife. Debra's maiden name is Whelan.

She loves Ray despite his shortcomings but is constantly tormented by her meddling in-laws, Frank and Marie Barone (Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts respectively). Debra is known to be attractive, admired by Robert - whom she tolerates better than Ray's other relatives. Ray considers her "out of [his] league", in spite of the fact that she is frequently physically, verbally and emotionally abusive towards him.

Patricia Heaton has also appeared in the role of Debra Barone on The King of Queens.

Lousy cooking

Because shes such a terrible cook, no one in the family can stand Debra's food. Other than Lemon Chicken (the first dish Debra ever made for Ray), her only other decent dish is braciole, which Ray likes. Though she made one good meal, it was soon revealed that braciole was the same meal Marie cooked for Frank before he proposed, thus making braciole Marie's special dish. Out of respect for Marie, Debra stopped making braciole. In another episode Marie gave Debra almost all of her recipes, but this does not seem to affect the quality of the meals.
