Jean-Marc Mormeck (born june 3, 1972 in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe) is a French professional boxer of African descent. He is a former WBC and WBA unified world cruiserweight champion.
Boxing Career
On February 23, 2002, Mormeck captured the WBA cruiserweight title by a 9th round technical knockout of Virgil Hill in Marseille, France. Following three defenses, he added the WBC cruiserweight crown to his collection on April 22, 2005 by way of unanimous decision over Wayne Braithwaite in Worcester, Massachusetts.
He lost his WBA and WBC titles by knockout in the 10th round to O'Neil Bell on January 7, 2006 for the undisputed (WBC/WBA/IBF) cruiserweight championship of the world. Later, he regained them back from Bell by unanimous decision on March 17, 2007.
In the first defense of his second title reign, he lost his WBA and WBC cruiserweight titles against David Haye on November 10, 2007. Haye recovered from a 4th round knockdown to score a technical knockout over Mormeck in the 7th.
Trivia
Prior to the first O'Neil Bell fight, Mormeck did not have a nickname. He asked the fans to select a nickname, and did not know that the fans had selected the name "The Marksman" until it was announced at the fight.[citation needed]
