American Medical Response, Inc. or AMR is the largest ambulance provider in the United States (public or private). AMR and EmCare are wholly owned subsidiaries of EMS L.P., an emergency management company held by the investment firm Onex. AMR is based out of Denver, Colorado.
In early 2005, Onex purchased AMR and EmCare from transportation giant Laidlaw International, Inc.
AMR operates in three regions and has over 250 community-based operations in 34 states. Its 17,000 employees, consisting of doctors, nurses, paramedics and EMTs plus support staff provide both emergency and non-emergency ambulance and rescue services. AMR operates over 4,000 ambulances and patient transfer vehicles and conducts over four million patient transfers a year.
Outside the urban cores of the largest cities, AMR often has a de facto monopoly in many suburban and rural areas (e.g., Silicon Valley). The colorful and distinctive livery of its vehicles is synonymous in those regions with "ambulance."
