"former"

"He has been married since 1987 to the former Lisa Johnson of Chicago."

I don't understand what the word 'former' means in this context. I'm probably just not familiar with its usage in this context, but if someone could double-check, that'd be swell. I assume it means what it usually means in relation to married couples, that Lisa Johnson is now Lisa Page. Another way to say the same thing is to refer to "Lisa Page, née Roberts."--66.51.190.85 (talk) 02:15, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
