In the difficult reconstruction years the trustees decided to relocate the remote and struggling college to its present location Ashland, Virginia, closer to railroad service.
The Boyd Tavern is a historical structure originally operated by merchant Alexander Boyd, and in recent years has been restored as a minor tourist attraction.
