Jay Brannan is an American singer/songwriter and actor.
He was born in Houston, Texas and later attended the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati for two semesters. He then moved to California and after three years moved to Manhattan, New York. Moving to Los Angeles, California, Brannan won a part in John Cameron Mitchell's film Shortbus after sending in an audition tape.
In Shortbus, Brannan plays a character named Ceth. Brannan performs one of his own songs in the movie, which includes graphic depictions of sexual activity.[1] He subsequently appeared in the film Holding Trevor.
In October 2006, Brannan began posting YouTube videos of his music. In his fourth video, he played "Soda Shop", his song from Shortbus, naked on the toilet in response to viewers who had complained about him not wearing a shirt in his videos [2]. The video was featured on YouTube's homepage.[3]
In March 2007, Brannan put up four of his songs for sale on Myspace, using SNOCAP. His EP is also for sale via digital download only on iTunes, Napster, CDBaby, and other online digital music retailers.
