Wikipedia:Changing username/Assistance

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Arcticocean (talk | contribs) at 23:57, 8 March 2008 (→‎Active users: been helping out, may as well add myself to the list). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

The username change and usurpation processes are complicated and tedious; accordingly, several users have agreed to do some of the requisite footwork to keep the processes organized and efficient. Those offering assistance should familiarise themselves with Changing usernames guidelines as a decent idea of the factors bureaucrats look at when deciding whether to grant requests is often helpful.

Active users

The following users are currently providing assistance. They are listed here for ease of contact and coordination. Please add yourself if you wish to help, and remove yourself if you do not intend to contribute further. Be aware that this position is rather dull and carries no particular prestige; furthermore, the workload is light, and an excess of helpers, even if all are diligent and well-meaning, will often confuse rather than ease the process. Status-seeking will not be looked upon kindly.

These tasks require a modicum of trust. If a bureaucrat must double-check a user's statements, that user's assistance is not useful. Errors resulting from carelessness or misunderstanding of policy are often easily corrected, but are nevertheless frustrating because the demands of the position are few. No such issues, or any of deliberate misconduct, have yet arisen; should one occur, a bureaucrat will probably ask that the user discontinue his contributions to these pages.

Tasks

  • Reformatting improperly listed requests (i.e. that don't use the template {{renameuser}}).
    • In addition, for some links in the template to work properly, spaces in usernames must be replaced with underscores. If they haven't been used, they should be fixed.
  • Making sure that the new requests are added to the bottom of the Current requests section of WP:CHU or the correct day's section on the Usurpation page.
  • Verifying that the request was actually submitted by the user named in the request (per point three in the Process section) by checking the page history. If it wasn't, note this on the request with {{CHU|notused|name of account that actually made the request}}.
  • Verifying that the destination username is available. If it has already been registered, note this on the request with {{CHU|taken|name of requested username}}.
    • If the account is registered, but meets the provisions for usurpation, add {{CHU|usurp|name of requested username}}. under the request (see template page for usage details).
  • For usurpations, verifying that the conditions have been met:
  1. Desired rename target has no edits and no log entries
  2. Rename target has been notified
  3. Rename target does/doesn't have email enabled on its account
The {{CUU}} template is used to indicate the results of these checks.

Authority

The users listed on this page do not have the authority to accept or decline username change and usurpation requests, although they may note when the conditions for a successful request have not been met.

Email

If the requested account in a usurpation request has enabled email. It is suggested that the following message (or similar) be sent to inform them of the request:

Hello [username],

You registered an account on Wikipedia, but haven't made any edits using that account. A user has requested that it be usurped- in other words, they wish to take over this username and use it as their own. If you have no objection to them doing so, just do nothing and your account will usurped in 7 days, allowing this user to use the name from then onwards. You would of course be able to create a new account at any time. If you want to request a particular username that isn't presently taken instead of being renamed to a generic one, please go to your talk page and request that.

If you do object to the user usurping your account, just say you object on your talk page or make any edit to Wikipedia (as accounts that have made edits cannot be usurped).

Don't hesitate to ask me any questions you may have. Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
