E=MC² (meaning: "Emancipation equals Mariah Carey to the second power")[3] is the fifteenth album and eleventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. The album is scheduled to be released on April 15 in the United States.[4][5]

Production history

Carey reportedly said she had been writing new songs while traveling on her latest tour.[6] It was reported that Carey is recording her new album and has booked a whole month in Anguilla's biggest villa and had a studio built in it. Hip hop producer Bryan Michael Cox visited Anguilla and contributed four new songs to the album.[7]

At TAO's New Years party, Carey's song "Migrate", which features singer/rapper T-Pain, was played.[8]

On February 1, 2008 a video of Mariah and Jermaine Dupri during one of their late night studio recording sessions in Carey's TriBeCa triplex was posted on Mariah's official website.[9]

Announced producers and collaborators

  • Rapper T.I. was interviewed by VIBE to talk about his forthcoming album T.I. vs. T.I.P., films, and future projects. He said that he is one of the producers of one of Carey's upcoming albums.[10]
  • Hip Hop producer Polow Da Don said that he'll be working with Carey for her new album.[11]
  • Rolling Stone Magazine wrote:

Mariah Carey's last album The Emancipation of Mimi was the breakout hit of 2005 selling more than six million copies (in the U.S. alone). For the follow-up, she's hewing close to Mimi's glossy, club-ready sound, with beats from Hip Hop producers Jermaine Dupri, Stargate, Bryan Michael Cox and Will.i.am.[12]

  • Speaking at the launch of her new M fragrance in LA, she revealed:

"I am so happy with the new tracks - there are 22 that we're trying to decide from.

But the way I like to look at it is the last album was the main course,

and the new one is the dessert!"[13]

Promotion

Although her promotional schedule officially commences in April[citation needed], Carey will be the musical guest on the March 15, 2008 episode of Saturday Night Live, performing "Touch My Body" and "Migrate"[14][15].She will be replacing Janet Jackson, who dropped out due to sickness. She will also appear on The Hills, premiering March 24[16].Other appearences include,the Friday Night project[17], the Oprah winfrey show on April 14[18],on American Idol “Idol Gives Back” TV Special airing April 9. A live performance and mentoring of AI contestants airs on April 16[19][20].She also filmed a live performance before a crowd of 100 for Bet on March 7, Mariah performed new material from her upcoming release E=MC²,which include:Migrate with special guest T-pain,the first single from E=MC², 'Touch My Body','Love Story', and 'That Chick,the performance will air April 16.[21].She is also expected to make an appearence on ABC's "Good Morning America."[22]

Critical reception

In February, The Observer previewed the album and gave it 4 out of 5 stars saying that "each track is precision-tooled to sound as if it were born to be banging out of a Hummer in Miami on a sunny Saturday" and calling her "the pack leader" of artists such as Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys.[25]

Critics also agreed that her voice is still in a good condition, Fox News and RWD stating "Her infamous eight-octave range has suffered a little wear and tear over the years, but Carey still can flutter from great highs to mellow lows like no one else"[26] and "Vocally and sonically, this is yet another outstanding release from the world's biggest selling superstar",[27] respectively.

Singles

"Touch My Body" was chosen as the lead single off the album. The single was officially released on February 19.[28] One day after the pre-release of the song to radio, "Touch My Body" debuted at #78 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, becoming Carey's 41st song to chart on this listing.[29] A week later, "Touch My Body" was the highest debut that week on the Billboard Hot 100 at #57.[30] In the next week, it entered the top 40 becoming her 31st single to do so.[31] It currently sits at #16.[32]

Samples

Stated by columnist Roger Friedman, the song "Lovin' You Long Time," samples DeBarge's "Stay with Me" and recalls the melodic riff of the "Hill Street Blues" theme music.[26]
