Secret and Whisper is a rock band from Canada, many of whose members were originally in a band named Stutterfly. The band has been officially named Secret and Whisper as of February 24, 2007. The lead singer of Stutterfly, Chris Stickney, decided to leave the band shortly after being dropped from Maverick Records to go live a "normal life". After this they went on a search to find a new singer to take his place.
Soon after Chris left the band they met up with Charles Furney, lead singer of thebleedingalarm, a band Stutterfly formerly toured with. With news that Charles recently decided to leave thebleedingalarm they decided to try and record a demo. Once the demo "Vanishings" was made they all agreed to have Charles as their new singer. They decided to think of a new band name because of the completely different sound that Charles' voice brought to the band.
Bio from the band
"We all have our secrets. Some are larger than others, and some are less important. But, it seems they all, insightful or insignificant, somehow contain some sort of mystery. What is it those two friends could be whispering about from across the room? Is it something important enough to make you wonder? A minds natural curiosity mixed with a little insecurity. After all, they are most likely talking about music, or social events. I guess it just feels nice sometimes to feel included. As if you were a part of something.
The beginning of this story does really stray far from these complacent feelings. It started with a gut feeling, and a 60 hour bus ride home. At the end of April 2006, in the middle of San Antonio, Texas, Charles parted ways with his old band. Feelings of something really gone wrong took place somewhere around the time the band had stopped writing music, to focus on different goals. Needing a change, Charles impulsively decided to retreat to his hometown, Kelowna. He found refuge in this city by the lake, and spent the long summer with old friends, listening to Nada Surf, trying to forget his memories.
Back home in Kelowna, Jordan, Ryan, Jason, and Bradyn were going through somewhat of an equally difficult situation. Their very successful band Stutterfly had hit a wall with news that their singer wanted to retire from the band. Not exactly knowing what to do next, the band decided to keep recording new demos and started searching for a new singer.
Equally disappointed with their situations, it was blind fate that had old friends Charles, Jordan, Bradyn, Ryan, and Jason reconnect last summer. Someone had the insanely bright idea that Charles and Jordan start a side project called Little Black Rain Cloud. While getting together to lay some keyboard drums on Jordans new digital recorder, Jordan had the thought of Charles trying out for Stutterfly. To convince the rest of the band of the idea, Charles and Jordan put together a song based on a demo that Stutterfly had been writing musically. This ended up becoming the song Vanishings. The band asked Charles to join.
Both being a little jaded from past record deals, and industry types, the new band started working on music for themselves, disregarding the want of others who needed to hear the same old music every other popular band was making. As Jason so eloquently put it, this opportunity has been given to us to make music that we love. Everyone agreed.
There was one thing that was in the back of all their minds though: The band that had been Stutterfly for 9 years was drastically different from the new band they had become. The band knew this new, important project, deserved its own name, and its own identity as a piece of art. Thank you to all the Stutterfly fans that have sent their love and support. The band owes it all to you.
It is a dream come true to be making music you believe in with your best friends. It feels fabulous to have pride in your art. Its nice to be in a band that cares about the integrity and heart in music. Thank you to all fans, peers, and friends, for helping us do this. You are a blessing to our lives. But most of all, its nice to feel like we are a part of something, even if it did spark from within a secret and a whisper." [citation needed]
