Weezer is the unconfirmed title of the forthcoming album by the band of the same name. If some sources are to be believed, this will be the band's third eponymously-titled work, and their sixth studio album overall. It has an alleged release date of June 17, 2008.[1] Rick Rubin has been named as producer,[2] and unlike past Weezer records, all four group members will contribute songwriting and lead vocals.

Early recording and speculation

The record's songs were recorded throughout Spring and Summer 2007 and recording was completed in October. Karl Koch has written that the album's recording process was "very cool," and "very fresh." Half of the album was recorded during the Spring of 2007 with Rick Rubin overseeing production. At the beginning of the album's creation each Weezer member asked themselves what they wanted to get out of the album. With that in mind, they set out to record.

The recording of this album was finished on October 18, 2007.[3]

In a Rolling Stone interview, Rivers Cuomo said that the sixth album would be due in April 2008.[citation needed]

On November 7th, a made-up release date of April 22nd, 2008 was posted on the hoax site albumsix.com. Later on November 19th, that hoax site (which the band's official website weezer.com previously mentioned had no official affiliation with the band) announced a made-up name for the album called "Tout Ensemble." (meaning "All Together" in French.) Shortly after, Koch posted on the official Weezer website that Tout Ensemble was not the name of the new album.

The album has been confirmed to be mixed by Rich Costey.

In the first podcast released on www.riverspodcast.com, Rivers mentioned playing drums on two songs on the album. In a recent interview with Pitchfork Media Cuomo stated the album will contain "longer songs, non-traditional song forms, different people writing and singing, instrument switching, TR-808s, synths, Southern rap, and baroque counterpoint."[4]

On March 11th, weezer.com posted an update from Cuomo which stated that the sixth album will be released in June 2008 and that the title of the suspected first single was "one word, starts with a T, ends with an R and contains twelve letters." This statement regarding the single was revoked one week later.

On April 1st, Rolling Stone reported that the album would once again be self-titled and would be "The Red Album", with the first single being titled "Pork and Beans".[5] However, this has yet to be confirmed or denied by the band. It is possible that it is an April Fools' joke.

Songs

Recorded during album sessions

It is not known whether all of these songs will feature on the final tracklisting.

  • "Daydreamer" - described in the liner notes to Alone as an "epic, 6-minute, symphonic type of art song." "This is the Way" was written as a more straightforward counterpart, and was originally selected by the band to be recorded for the Weezer album, but Cuomo persuaded the others to go with "Daydreamer" instead.
  • "Everybody Get Dangerous" - features briefly in the film 21. The song is not included on the official soundtrack release.
  • "Ms. Sweeney"[6]
  • "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived"[7]
  • "Automatic" - remixed by LA Riots for the upcoming video game Gran Turismo 5. This track features Pat Wilson on lead vocals, as heard in this YouTube video.

Further possible inclusions

More songs that Cuomo has mentioned writing since 2005:

  • "Pig"
  • "East Coast or West Coast"[8]
  • "Piece of the Pie"[9]
  • "Our Time Will Come"
  • "Heart Songs"[10]
  • "Pork and Beans"
  • "Troublemaker"
