Tom Newey (b. 1982-10-31 in Sheffield) is an English footballer who plays at left back for Football League Two side Grimsby Town, he is also known to fill in at centre back either as part of a three or four man defense.
Club career
Newey began his career as a trainee with Leeds United in August 2002.[1] He was loaned to Cambridge United in February 2003 where he made seven league and cup appearances, and to Darlington in March 2003 where he made seven appearances, scoring one goal.[1] He was offered a permanent contract by Darlington in May 2003 but turned it down.[2] After being released by Leeds, Newey joined Leyton Orient in July 2003, where he made 63 appearances, scoring three goals.[1]
Newey re-joined Cambridge United on loan in January 2005 and signed a permanent deal with Cambridge two month later.[3][4] He made 16 appearances for Cambridge,[1] but was released after Cambridge were relegated from the Football League.
Grimsby Town
After Cambridge were relegated from the Football League, Newey signed a one-year contract with Grimsby Town in June 2005.[5] He made 43 league and cup appearances for Grimsby in the 2005-06 season, as Grimsby challenged for promotion only to lose out in the play-off final.[1][6] He signed a new three-year contract with Grimsby in the summer of 2006,[7] and made a further 46 league and cup appearances in the 2006-07 season.[1]
