Future Trunks (未来のトランクス, Mirai no Torankusu, known simply as Trunks), is a character who first appeared in the Dragon Ball manga created by Akira Toriyama, more popularly followed by Dragon Ball Z. Trunks is introduced to be a boy from the future, his father is Vegeta,[1] the prince of the extinct race of fictional aliens called the Saiyans, and his mother is Bulma,[2] the heiress of a massive company called Capsule Corporation. "Mirai" is the Japanese kanji for 'future'. Trunks' seiyū is provided by Takeshi Kusao. In the English language dub, he is voiced by Eric Vale.
In Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, he is voiced by Skip Stellrecht.
This is the first Trunks that the readers and/or viewers ever see in the Dragon Ball manga (the section he is in is titled Dragon Ball Z in North America) and the Dragon Ball Z anime. Trained by Future Gohan in an alternate time line, Trunks travels through time to seek help from Goku to prevent the Artificial Humans No. 17 and No. 18 from ravaging Earth. Trunks is a determined and loyal warrior. His name is a play on "trunks", a type of male clothing.
Appearance
Trunks appears tall and slender although still muscular. He favors his maternal side by having light blue eyes and light purple hair. From the time he first appears to the time he enters the Room of Spirit and Time, and after the Cell Games, his hair is cut short in bowlcut style. From the time he exits to the end of the Cell Games, his hair is long. His hair grows unlike full blooded Saiyan hair (due to the Room's year-in-a-day effect).
Early on, Trunks wears a black sleeveless shirt and black pants along with his blue Capsule Corporation jacket and boots, as well as a sword in the sash worn round his back. After he exits the Room of Spirit and Time, he starts to wear attire similar to his father's, white gloves, white boots with yellow tips, a skin-tight blue jumpsuit, and Saiyan battle armor, which was given to him by his mother Bulma (present time line). Trunks could only transform up to Super Saiyan before entering the Room of Spirit and Time. But afterwards, his training gave him the ability to transform into Super Trunks.
Personality
Trunks' personality is distinguishable from the other characters because he originally was seen to be cautious and calculating. He often thinks through things and plans, advising against random action because of the horrific events in his own time line. Originally, this is shown when he told Kuririn to take the blueprints of the androids first before destroying Dr. Gero's laboratory and also in his reluctance to take action unless Goku is present. As the series continues, Trunks becomes more confident and less cautious, but never loses his rational thinking, he is also seen learning from his mistakes and poor judgment, such as his choice to use the Super Saiyan 3rd Grade.
Unlike his father or alternate time line self, Trunks is often shown to be very polite and well-mannered. This is clearly shown in the original version through his speech with his parents, as he is often heard using the polite form of Japanese phrases when addressing his allies.
Character history
Future Trunks is first introduced just before the Android Saga where he fights and kills Freiza and King Cold (Freiza's father).[3] Afterwards Future Trunks along with Earth's heroes (Z Soldiers) greet Son Goku, as he arrives from a long journey in space.[4] He also warns Goku of Dr. Gero's No. 17 and No. 18 and that Goku would contract a deadly heart virus.[5] Later, Trunks, along with the present timeline Gohan discovered Cell's cocoon that came from a mossy and damaged time machine. It is found out later in the series that it is owned by the other Future Trunks and he was killed by Cell after that Trunks killed Android 17 & 18 in his own timeline. Cell transformed himself back into an egg while activating first Future Trunks' time machine to go back to the present timeline (to eat 17 & 18, absorb their powers and achieve the Perfect Cell form). It is probable that this alternate Future Trunks didn't train in the Room of Spirit and Time. Future Trunks then returned to his own time after the present timeline Gohan killed Perfect Cell alone. Future Trunks returned to the activated 17 and 18 in his own time for a second and final rematch.[6] Also, Future Trunks is responsible for defeating some of the most powerful villains in the saga such as Frieza, his father King Cold, Android 14, and Androids 17 and 18 as well as Cell in his own timeline. [7]
Differences
By growing up in such a bleak future, Future Trunks is much more serious during his childhood. He also becomes much closer to the Future Gohan from his own timeline because Goten doesn't exist in that time line. Present Trunks looks up to and respects Gohan, but their present selves are not as close as their future counterparts.
It is unknown how Trunks would react to meeting Future Trunks, however this occurs in the video games Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors. In Budokai 3, as well as in Shin Budokai, Trunks states that it is "Just like having a brother" whereas in Legendary Super Warriors, Tenkaichi 2 and Tenkaichi 3 he does not even realize it is his future self, and the two have a sparring match. They did meet in the manga and anime, however, when Trunks was still just a baby; once when Future Trunks rescued him and Bulma from Dr. Gero's attack, and once when Future Trunks came to Capsule Corp. before the Cell Games announcement. For a minute, Trunks incessantly pulled on Future Trunks' hair.
Abilities
Like many other characters in the series Future Trunks can manipulate chi to power of enhance his attacks, Future Trunks has the ability to use the Bukujutsu (lit. "lighter than air skill"), which enables him to levitate and fly. His signature attacks are attacks given to him in the Budokai games called "Buster Cannon" which is a violet energy blast,"Burning Storm" which seems to be a ki volley form of the attack. Although these attacks have been widely accepted as his signature techniques neither of them have ever been seen in the anime or manga. Future Trunks has two ultimate attacks entitled "Burning Attack" which involves a series of hand movements and fires a ball or blue blast, and "Finish Buster" which is a giant ball of energy that appears above his head; both techniques have no name in the anime, but are named in video games. This was used once against Vegeta and future Imperfect Cell. In the Tenkachi 2, 3 and Shin budokai games , Trunks have the Heat Dome attack. But in the anime it is the same attack as "Finish Buster".
Forms and transformations
When Future Trunks is first introduced he transformed into a Super Saiyan.[8] Future Trunks uses this form while in battle. After training in the Room of Spirit and Time, Trunks is able to access Super Saiyan 2nd Grade and Super Saiyan 3rd Grade. Trunks uses both forms to fight Cell's Semi-Perfect and Perfect forms respectively but afterwards reverts to using the normal Super Saiyan form after Cell revealed to him that his bulky muscles are making him too slow to hit him.

He is also set to appear in Dragonball Online.
