Austin Santos (born 1987) better known artistically as Arcangel, is a Dominican/Puerto Rican reggaeton artist. Known from the reggaeton duo Arcangel y De La Ghetto, he is well known for his charismatic, romantic lyrical style.
Biography
Austin Santos, best known as Arcangel, was born in 19857, in the city of New York. His Dominican mother, and Puerto Rican father, moved to Puerto Rico in the early 80s to realize her dream of singing by joining a Merengue group known as Las Chicas del Clan. Austin met a young man known in reggaeton as "De La Ghetto" and the two began working together ever since. "Arcangel & De La Ghetto", although they are relatively new artists, have done well so far with hits like "Agresivo", "Sorpresa", and "Mi Fanática". They gained fame relatively quickly. Many people who have been listening to reggaeton since its beginnings in the early 90's criticize the duo, particularily Arcangel for being "cocky" and trying to engage older more established reggaeton stars in rap battles. Other people argue that his attitude is warranted because the duo is well known without having released their own album. A recent tiraera (rap battle) occured with another duo, Jowell & Randy, You can check out some videos of Arcangel talking about them on Youtube. This in fact was all a publicity stunt to promote their hit concert in Puerto Rico's Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot (Arcangel vs. Jowell y Randy), the concert went on to be a sold-out sensation. Arcangel, Jowell and Randy are all good friends.
Music career
Arcangel was a formal member of the reggaeton duo Arcangel y De La Ghetto. They were known for their romantic style of song-writing, as well as bilingual lyricals (ex. De La Ghetto's rapping style). They were one of the most popular artists in reggaeton and remain so today, though as of 2007, the two have gone solo and are now working on solo records.
