A gun is a mechaical device that fires projectiles at high velocity, using a propellant such as gun powder or compressed air.

In weaponry, the term is also used for types of artillery that utilize a smooth barrel. The term gun is often used as a synonym to firearm, but usually refers only to smoothbore firearms and naval artillery, thus excluding rifles. Types of guns vary and the most powerful take active armament procedures in militaries around the world.

The word gun is also applied to some more or less vaguely gun-like tools, glue gun for example.
