Metro North Mall is a 1.3 million square foot (123,076 m2) regional mall located at 400 NW Barry Road, in Kansas City North, Missouri.

Metro North opened its doors in 1976 and was the only enclosed mall located north of the Missouri River in the Kansas City metro area, as well as being the second largest mall in the area at 1.3 million s.f. (Oak Park Mall is larger by .2 mi s.f.)

The mall has approximately 60 stores on two levels and four anchor stores. At present, Metro North does contain many vacancies, primarily on its upper level. The former Montgomery Ward store which closed in 2001, and its retail 'wing' are completely vacant, except for a Lenscrafters. Dillard's recently converted to a clearance store. The other anchors are JCPenney and Macy's (which originally opened as The Jones Store).

History

Despite the challenges of the market, the mall interior is well maintained and features a beautiful 1980s-style center court area with a stage surrounded by a pool of water. Another interesting feature are four hot-air balloons, suspended from the ceiling that float up and down. Metro North previously had a small 2-screen theatre near the Montgomery Ward section, but it closed along with the 6-screen theatre on a pad site behind the mall nearest to Montgomery Ward. The separate theatre has now reopened and plays second-run movies for $2.

Traditionally there are a number of seasonal 'holiday stores' open during the Christmas shopping season, thus broadening its consumer draw during this critical retailing period. Included with seasonal shopping comes earlier opening hours and later closing, throughout the months of November and December. The Christmas seasonal stores feature such items as beautiful hand-made figurines and decorations, candles, artwork, and other great gifts. A calendar store offers a large variety of calendars and games. Of course, there is still a good selection of such national specialty retailers like Bath & Body Works, Spencer Gifts, and Hallmark as well as local stores such as C&P Alterations and The Garage Warehouse that will continue to make Metro North a retail destination. Renovation is now being planned by Alberta Development Partners, construction is slated for later in 2007. It is planned to be a more open retail and residential environment including many fine stores, restaurants, and a cinema. The renovation plans for Metro North were feature in the newspaper. The plans call for residential and senior housing in the back, as well as the current anchors and more retail. However, the plans are not expected to take effect for a great deal of time. The independent film titled "Shoe Store" was filmed in Metro North Mall. The vacant "Steve's Shoes" store was used build the set for "Shoe Store."
