Looking for some direction.
I just wrote this to someone clled "N" who responded to a comment I made on a page called Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/Gabrielsimon/Evidence. I wanted to get your take on this. I've been somewhat disturbed (probably inordinately so) by the discussion surrounding this controversy. Hamster Sandwich 23:36, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
In response to your question at "Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/Gabrielsimon/Evidence", I copied this from Gabrielsimon's user page. Quote "It has been said that I have a very open mind as well.... I have been called inhumanly patient... and inhuman. If you want to know more, ask. I'm on MSN, YIM and AIM. Leave a message at my email address to learn what the IDs are."
I have been watching this sad saga unfold like a slow motion car crash for several days now. Beyond the obvious squabble that has been going on, I have come to some conclusions (based strictly on my own personal observations) that much of this GS, Ketrovin, Khulhy, Gavin the Chosen (and who knows how many others) is a cry for help from a lonely person. I also feel that many of the typographical and grammatical errors are contrived so as to foster a sympathetic response. I am curious as to what lengths the editors and admins are willing to go to in "babysitting" this individual. I am a new user myself, but is it in the best interest of WP to coddle a person who seems to go out of their way to be obtrusive? I wait, with interest to see how the situation plays itself out. There are a few admins here who I have made positive connections with, and I am inclined to copy this memo to their talk pages just to get some outside opinions.
- Well it all comes out in the wash, as they say User talk:Gavin the Chosen. My opinion is hes a nut-job. He goes from user to user like a sad sack looking for help. "Whats a sockpuppet?" "Can you help me?" "I got an email from a friend who told me..." Its all very tawdry and pathetic. Sad. Well sorry to take up your time with this, I just saw a pattern and wanted to report it. Mr. Gavin should be very glad I'm not an admin, because quite frankly I wouldn't have the patience for these shenanigans. I hope he becomes a good editor, and makes the extra work you admins have done with him worthwhile. Thanks again. Hamster Sandwich 06:46, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
I have written an article about this poem which you had transwiki'd and listed on VfD. I would be grateful if you could have a look and see what you think. Capitalistroadster 10:00, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

Your gracious comment is greatly appreciated. Believe me, I am grateful for the oppose votes as well as the support votes. They tell me that other users like you really care about the project and that I have some areas that I need to work on strengthening. Gotta run, but take care and stay in touch. And thank you yet again! I trly appreciate your support and faith throughout this messy, seven-day ordeal. I promise to use the new Powers of the Cabal wisely and to ask before hitting the history eraser button on the borderline cases. :) I think I'll stick with obvious vandal stubs for now. Anon block
The block period was indeed excessive, and came in the context of dealing with other things. At the least I should have left a template:block message on their userpage, though there was none at the time. I had thought it odd that an anon would use their first edit to involve themselves in that particular way in an active and controversial edit war. A difference between vandalism and POV at that point seemed rather slight. While I was rather busy with other things, I was aware that others make a habit of perusing the block list for anomalies, and any excessive block terms. -St|eve 07:36, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

AOL Block Pattern
Hi -- hope you are enjoying being an admin. However, I am an innocent victim of your vandal crusade. When you block an AOL user -- even if they have a Wiki account -- you block all the editors that are randomly assigned that IP number. I've been hit by three different blocks in less than 24 hours, yours being the latest (see below). As you know, I am a serious contributing editor and, as I like to sneak in 30 minutes to an hour of Wiki work several times during the day, these blocks are becoming very irritating. It is a software problem, according to User JRM, and doesn't have much priority with the designers. If you are interested in this problem, please take a look at my user page -- User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. Any influence with the powers that be would be appreciated. In the meantime -- if you are hanging around -- please release your block. WBardwin 06:18, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Dmcdevit.
The reason given is this: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Donald R. Alford". The reason given for Donald R. Alford's block is: "dotsix sockpuppet, vandalism".
Your IP address is 207.200.116.74.
- Thanks -- I was finally able to add that paragraph to Martha Washington after trying, at intervals, all day. The ability to edit talk pages seems to be a funny quirk -- I can even sometimes edit talk pages on articles, but not the articles themselves. At other times, the system won't even let me edit my talk page. It is a mystery to me. Appreciate your help. I think I'll put the thing to bed and try to do a little more tomorrow. WBardwin 07:20, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
London, Ontario
Hello Dmc! I was wondering if you could take a look at this article (London, Ontario)and see if you think some of the recent editing by an IP account constitute a POV edit (particularly the Transportation section). If so could you revert to a previous edition? The Ip account appears to have an axe to grind. If you do end up reverting, I'll add the Bill Brady material I edited in there today. I left a note on the articles talk page to justify the readdition of that person. Thanks! Hamster Sandwich 21:51, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
Hello again Dmc! I was wondering if you could take another look at the article London, Ontario. There is an anon user who keeps removing an entry under "Notable Londoners" Bill Brady. His reasoning for doing so is very weak and I have provided what I feel is adequite proof on that articles talk page to back up his notability. If you would kindly take a few minutes to intervene and perhaps leave a comment on that page? I will look here for a response so as to preserve continuity. Thanks! Hamster Sandwich 21:17, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
- Hm. Hm. Sorry to take so long to respond, but I've been distracted. Well, I can sort of see the other point of view, but not the vehemence. Having taken a look at the article (which you've written!) I'm convinced he's certainly notable enough to warrant an article here. I do, however, think it is a different question whether it warrants a mention in his home town's article. If it were (sorry to say) New York or Paris or somewhere like that, I'd say that we have to have some kind of procedure for pruning the less notable ones, even ones with articles. In this case, though, I see no reason to remove this bluelink from a relatively small list, when there are still red links there. And as of this moment, it's still in there, and I see no problem with that. Dmcdevit·t 01:07, August 20, 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry to respond so slowly to your response! I just saw you pop up on my watched page and thought "oh damn, I asked him to look at that..." :-) Well thanks for your opinion, I've had some feedback from others as well. The anon who keeps removing Brady from the list of notable Londoners seems to have a personal axe to grind. London is a small town and its quite possible that his obstinacy stems from personal contact of some kind with Brady. Theres an extensive discussion regarding the entry of a single bullet to that part of London, Ontario article. Feel free to add a comment there, I was trying to tell the anon user that the concensus was that the Brady bullet should stay, and he countered that although everyone but himself was agreeing with the inclusion, that wasn't a concensus. I'll admit, it is the water here! Thanks again Dmc! Hamster Sandwich 07:09, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Something pretty to look at. A bright yellow flower. You deserve it! Hamster Sandwich 22:37, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
Yes, Thank you
Yes, I did see your suggestion about a admin position. I'm thinking seriously about it, but it does seem self serving to have my ease of access as the primary motivation. And, quite frankly, I work in such obscure corners and on topics of such minority interest that I doubt few editors know I exist. So, give me a little time and we'll talk again. I do appreciate your willingness to nominate me, however. It's heartwarming. Best wishes. WBardwin 09:28, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
First off, thanks for finally putting the FilePile VFD out of its misery. Secondly, User:Kelly Martin mentioned having the issue of whether or not the article should be "mediated" rather than relisted on VfD. Since I haven't been incredibly active on Wikipedia in the last year or so, I'm not entirely sure what this entails. I know that I and a few others are interested in having the article be dealt with according to proper WikiProcess, so please advise us how we can do this. How do we enlist a mediator, and what does the process of mediation entail / result in? Thanks! — Adam Conover † 06:05, August 19, 2005 (UTC)
(Also, I noticed your "caused by both sides" note on the VfD page. I did my best to deal with what I saw as poor Wikiquette on Xed's part properly, but perhaps I did not do as well I could have. If you have any advice for how the situation could have been handled better, I would appreciate it -- it was the worst clash I've ever had with another user on the 'pedia, so it left me at a bit of a loss. Thanks again. — Adam Conover † 06:31, August 19, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your quick response. I will file an RFC for content and an RFC for user tomorrow. I am still committed to having a reasonable discussion of the merits of deleting the article take place -- if we were able to manage one on the article's talk page, and I informed you of it, would you be willing to relist the article and keep tabs on the voting/discussion? I feel that what this article (and the potential future VfD) will need most is a watchful eye, rather than responsible Wikipedians who are just passing through, and if that watchful eye were an admin it would help incredibly. If you're too busy, though, of course feel free to pass. — Adam Conover † 07:02, August 19, 2005 (UTC)

Title dispute
Hello. Thanks for unprotecting the lists of companies and the airports of the PRC. As the previous edit warring was partly an outcome of the disputed title, I would like to suggest to add a notice on the title dispute, on top of the {{twoversions}} box, to let readers know what's happening with the lists. I've made the request at the talk pages (companies, airports). — Instantnood 09:20, August 19, 2005 (UTC)
- That's actually part of a set of naming conventions, and the disputes involved from how the naming conventions should be intepreted and enforced. WP:RM would not be desirable. There is currently an ArbCom case in process, and parties involved are supposed to refrain, though largely on a voluntary basis, from making relevant changes. The notice I suggested doesn't look good to me either, but the information on the disputes over the scope and title has to be delivered to the readers. — Instantnood 06:50, August 20, 2005 (UTC)
Your block of Xed
Re: the block you placed at Xed (talk · contribs). I can see there are 3RR violations, but did you really see him violating his personal attack parole? To be honest, it surprised me that Xed managed to stay cool such a long time against so many 'new' editors attacking him and raking up old (and irrelevant) stories. A block of 72 hours for losing your temper while standing up against a bunch of sockpuppets might be a bit excessive. — mark ✎ 13:12, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
- I think I would have been justified blocking for 72 hours or more regardless ofthe parole, actually. I mean, I counted, I think, more than 20 reverts on August 18. Simply unacceptable. Also, I interpret parole as meaning even the slightest offense merits blocking. I think using edit summaries to call voters vandals and trolls, when I don't see him as being anymore in the right than the other party (and really, I don't see any "vandals" here) certainly qualifies. But it is moot anyway, because of the sheer enormity of the 3RR violation. And it's not his first block. Dmcdevit·t 15:44, August 19, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, you recently blocked Mikefar as a sockpuppet of Melissadolbeer, you may like to take a look at the following similar users as well-
- Angel77 (talk • contribs • block) - edit history is pasting accusations of sockpuppetry to article talk pages and user talk pages
- -Angel77- (talk • contribs • block) - not a user, but a userpage used for sockpuppet allegations, created by
- 202.176.97.116 (talk • contribs • block) - edit history (3 edits) consists of pasting accusations of sockpuppetry onto User:-Angel77- and the Authentic Matthew VFD
- Watcher1 (talk • contribs • block) - edit history consists of accusing users of sockpuppetry, in edit summaries to Authentic Matthew, and deleting the talk page of Authentic Matthew, and replacing it with sockpuppet accusations
- -Watcher1- (talk • contribs • block) - edit history consists of pasting sockpuppet accusations over their user & talk pages, and to a VFD on Authentic Matthew
- -Johnny- (talk • contribs • block) - edit history constists of pasting sockpuppet allegations on their own user page, and pasting the same to User talk:Melissadolbeer
- Kendea (talk • contribs • block) - edit history consists of pasting "as the original writer of this article...." "response" into the middle of a VFD and simultaneously moving around votes and deleting other comments. The original writer of the article is Melissadolbeer
- Paulya (talk • contribs • block) - edit history consists of a single edit [1] pasting a large chunk of content written by other people into the middle of a VFD on Authentic Matthew
- Teenangel (talk • contribs • block) - entire edit history is "Ril is attacking Authentic Matthew", despite supposedly being a "new" user, and pasting accusation of doc glasgow being a sockpuppet of -Ril-
- Goodboy (talk • contribs • block) - entire edit history is reverting Authentic Matthew back from a redirect - despite being a new user, they somehow are aware that an article existed in the edit history rather than just a redirect, and somehow have prior knowledge of Ril
- Ghpbermuda (talk • contribs • block) - entire edit history consists of creating the same content as Authentic Matthew at a different location (The Original Gospel of Matthew - which was VFD'd out of existance) - despite being a "new" user, seems to have a remarkably good familiarity with the content of the article Authentic Matthew, which was redirected at that point
- 202.176.184.118 (talk • contribs • block) - entire edit history consists of pasting the content of Authentic Matthew into Authentic Gospel of Matthew to preserve the content.
- 202.176.97.230 (talk • contribs • block) - entire edit history consists of creating redirects to Authentic Matthew
- 203.144.210.225 (talk • contribs • block) - entire edit history is adding link spam to related articles creating links which point to Authentic Matthew, or altering the content to suit that of Authentic Matthew
- Jlchan (talk • contribs • block) - entire edit history is blanking their user page and this edit to the Authentic Matthew VFD accusing Theresa Knott of bias (somehow knowing Theresa Knott despite being a "new" user), and an edit summary indicating prior knowledge of Ril

Could you settle (or prevent) an argument?
Despite the trolling of -Ril-/Ron (above), there is a genuine attempt to settle the problems over at Authentic Matthew. Unfortunately, we are being hindered by Melissadolbeer and her 'husband' Poorman, who are interpreting a 'keep (no consensus)' as 'keep the article as it is - don't substantially change it - and never merge nor redirect'. As you closed the VfD, I wondered if you might be willing to set the record straight, and save a lot of agro. Our attempts to explain are being ignored as biased. --Doc (?) 07:45, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
Cancel that, peace seems to be breaking out --Doc (?) 00:13, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
An 'authentic' miracle seems to have occurred. It looked like WWIII with Melissa and her 'spouse' Poorman interpreting 'keep no noconc' as 'keep this version' and never change', and then -Ril- showing up. However, after I warned her about accusing me of being a sock (of -Ril-'s, as if!), she/they indicated a willingness to cooperate. Peter Kirby, and SimonP helpfully weighed in with real scholarship (destroying the credibility of the article)- and 'Poorman' agreed to a final merge with 'Gospel of the Hebrews', which Peter is re-writing. So, a solution. Although, I'd not be surprised if we havn't heard the end of this. Anyway, you did ask. Thanks for silencing Mikefar, that and Tomer's explosion at Melissa seem to have been the tipping point. --Doc (?) 09:08, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

FilePile Help Requested
I am sorry to report that there are more problems with the FilePile article. Edits and images are being reverted back and forth, regardless of discussion that is supposed to be taking place. I feel like a pest, it is ashame things cannot be dealt with without supervision. User Xed is repeatedly reverting to his own version of the page, without verify'ing. Also without discussing things to be added, as suggested to him. Again claiming "This contains music. Copyright issues are ignored, and most of the files are technically illegal." Thank you again for all of your help with this issue and again sorry to be a bother. --Flaunted 17:46, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

A-ha! An admin!
Hello there brave editor! Would you take a look at Theodore Streleski, and if you feel the article has been improved, would you remove the conform to higher quality tag? I don't want to do it myself, it would seem conceited somehow, to me at least. I helped save that from VfD awhile ago, and a bot renewed the tag, reminding me I had wanted to do some polishing and further editing. So I went and did it. I don't even think it's technically a stub anymore. Oh BTW, thanks for your lovely memo on my talk page. Just a good stub now. I don't think anyone would care if you did it yourself, but I'm happy to take a look at it for you anyway. Oh by the way, I was going outdo Fernando by taking a picture of my snake in the act of eating a mouse, and giving you a real hamster (well, mouse) sandwich. I have been a snake owner and amature herpetologist for over 30 years! What kind of critter do you have? - Well it's a California Kingsnake, an albino one, too. White with yellow speckles. I got him (Sneaky) for a birthday present a few years back, he's probably 4 or 5 years old. Unfortunately I've now moved to a dorm hundreds of miles from home, and the snake stayed there. The picture will have to wait :( In other news, this is totally off topic, but a lady bug just landed on my computer screen. Maybe I should close the window... Queen snake is a really impressive article for being so new! I remember the days before school when I had the time to just write a brand new article on something. Try to see if you can add some more wikilinks to the middle. And it looks like the capitalization of the name is inconsistent. But the content is pretty polished already. Good one. re:vfd templates
Thanks. I didn't change anything. After a study of the tangle things are in at the moment, I realised that the problem was some older-than-PfD debates that have not subst:d the template get confused. They follow the new link to Pages for Deletion, think "hey, where'd my deletion nomination go" and make an accidental fork under "Pages for Deletion" when the original is still under "Votes for Deletion". A matter not assisted by where the edit links on WP:VFD point(ed). And my personal problem was needing to fix my autovfd script to the new name. Anyway, thank you for unprotecting them. They can reprotected again if that is their usual state. -Splash 08:48, 28 August 2005 (UTC)
- It's already reprotected. Which has meant that...its edit-rate has gone through the roof! Anyway, thank you for the very kind message. I am within a few days of the quasi-magical 3 months now, and I'm not aware of any impending personality changes occuring before the end of this week. At least a few editors would still want me to have been around for rather longer, though. I'd like to be able to help out more widely than I can at present, so, if you think I'd stand a decent chance, we could give it a whirl. You are currently shepherding Beland through RfA — whilst he's a shoo-in (already!) perhaps we should hold fire until after that's done and dusted? -Splash 18:02, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
- Okay, Friday it is then. Beland will be almost done by then. I'll go work out my answers. Thanks! -Splash 19:42, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
Lists of airports and companies in the PRC
I'd like to hear your opinion on the recent attempts to display the other versions of these two lists. I've started discussions at the talk pages (airports, companies). Thank you very much. :-) — Instantnood 07:50, August 29, 2005 (UTC)
About a block (from user page)
From my own user page:
This is your last warning. The next time you vandalize a page you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia.. This account seems to be used for vandalism and personal attacks exclusively. Bishonen | talk 15:02, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
So what's this about then? I get a warning (see above) and then dcmdevit just blocks without warning or anything at all? Is this how it's supposed to work?
I had understood that, after the comments that I exchange with Bishonen, I was on some sort of probation. I have not edited anything since then. So why is Dmcdevit blocking me?
Is this supposed to be a serious project or is it just an ego trip for people such as dcmdevit?

- Your "exchange" with Bish (and you comments here as well) showed that you had no intention of stopping the personal attacks. And your contribution history and conversation with Bishonen proves you know how to use a talk page, so your adding that to my user page was simply vandalism. Next time you go around calling people "shitheads" don't be surprised when you find yourself blocked. Oh, and by the way, -Ril-, don't think I'm fooled by your little innocent anonymous sockpuppetry. So it is just an ego trip for people like you. I thought so. I'm rather unsure about the usefulness of such a thing as wikipedia, which perhaps show in my uneven attitude to people/things here, but your arrogant, cocksure attitude "'cos you're an admin and so a really cool guy" is more likely to alienate people than anything I could say.

I appreciate the effort here, but I would suggest that objective wording will be much more useful than phrasing that requires subjective interpretation. The idea that the editor and admin don't have a history is hard to determine. one week on the article with the attack, and one week after any block/warning is issued sort of separates the admin from the editor. It also requires more than one admin to permanently block an editor (6, to be precise). while it isnt' perfect, it is objective, which makes it easier to implement and harder for admins to abuse. FuelWagon 21:39, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
- I think you misunderstood my emphasis. The goal is not making it harder for admins to abuse. That's the means to the goal. If you make it hard for admins to abuse, then you can achieve the goal of making it bloody difficult for false accusations of "admin gaming" to choke the system. The point is to design a system so that it can run by itself with little oversight from arbcom, and with a lot of trust that it will work right. If you ever get pulled over for speeding, the cop gives you a ticket or a warning or whatever, adn when you get back on the road, he either turns around and goes the other way or he takes the first exit. The point is not to prevent him from gaming you and giving you multiple tickets, the point is that if every police officer has to do that, then you can be much more confident that if a driver gets two speeding tickets right in a row from different police officers that they're both legit. It's like having two parachutes instead of one. a redundant system is more reliable than just one. FuelWagon 21:58, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
