The "Ergenekon network" is the name of an alleged clandestine ultra-nationalist political organization within Turkey, allegedly plotting to foment unrest by assassinating Turkish intellectuals, including Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk, with the ultimate goal of bringing down the government. In the course of the investigation dozens of people have been taken into custody, including ultra-nationalist lawyer Kemal Kerinçsiz, leader of Turkey's Workers' Party Doğu Perinçek, and retired brigadier general Veli Küçük.[1] [2] [3] A second wave of detentions in early July, 2008 saw police stage early morning raids to detain former generals Hursit Tolon and Sener Eruygur as well as Sinan Aygun, head of the Ankara Chamber of Commerce. No charges have been brought.
