Yaddle
Yaddle is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe.
Yaddle is a Jedi Master of tremendous power and wisdom who serves on the Jedi Council during the events of The Phantom Menace — and the only non-human female on the Council at the time. She is of the same species as Jedi Master Yoda, revealed in the Star Wars novel Cloak of Deception. She was operated in The Phantom Menace by Phil Eason.
Expanded Universe information
Yaddle's backstory is explained in Star Wars Tales. In the story, she travels with her master, Plovin Kut, to the Koba system to deal with the threat of a local warlord named Tulak. The two Jedi are betrayed by spies and ambushed by the forces of the warlord; Kut is killed and Yaddle is captured. Tulak then imprisons the diminutive apprentice in a dungeon, far below the surface of the planet Koba. There Yaddle would stay for more than a century, honing her mastery of the Force, ready for her eventual chance to escape - which arrives with a massive earthquake, allowing her to escape to the surface. Instead of immediately returning to Coruscant, however, she remains on the planet and helps the Kobans rebuild their decimated society. These efforts attract the attention of Tulak's heir, Kalut, who fights with Yaddle. Yaddle defeats the tyrant and in the process liberates the people of Koba once and for all.
When Yaddle eventually returns to Coruscant, the Jedi Council determines that her survival of a century of imprisonment and subsequent liberation of Koba are sufficient grounds not only to promote her instantly to the rank of Jedi Master, but also to offer her a temporary seat on the Jedi Council.
Serving the Republic
During this time, Yaddle trains dozens of Padawans, including Oppo Rancisis, who also goes on to serve on the Council, and Empatojayos Brand, who survives the Great Jedi Purge. She is also a healer and diplomat and goes on many missions to mediate disputes. Sometimes, these disputes turn violent, such as the summit of Eriadu (depicted in Cloak of Deception). At such times Yaddle demonstrates her prowess with a lightsaber.
Yinchorri attack on the Jedi Temple
Just prior to the Battle of Naboo (depicted in The Phantom Menace), Yaddle sends a number of Jedi to the Yinchorri system to deal with the troublesome Yinchorri. The Jedi Temple is soon attacked by the Yinchorri. Yaddle, wielding an orange lightsaber, helps defeat the vicious invaders. Yaddle also contributes to the mission through her knowledge of the Jedi archives.
A Noble Death
Yaddle is killed in Star Wars Jedi Quest 5: The Shadow Trap, set shortly before the Clone Wars. She uses the Force to absorb a deadly chemical weapon, in the process saving the city of Naatan (in which Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker are staying), but also dying instantly. The bioweapon was released by Granta Omega.
Yaddle's place on the Jedi Council is filled by her successor, Shaak Ti.
Behind the scenes
Yaddle was operated in The Phantom Menace by Phil Eason. Along with Yarael Poof, she was specifically removed from the Jedi Council during the conception of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones because series creator George Lucas envisioned the members of the Council fighting and thought that animating Yaddle along with Yoda, and possibly Poof, would be too costly and time-consuming.
