Song

"Little Miss Obsessive" is the second single taken from Ashlee Simpson's third studio album, Bittersweet World. The song features the Plain White T's lead singer, Tom Higgenson, on vocals.[2] Unlike much of Bittersweet World, it has a pop rock style[3] more characteristic of Simpson's previous music. It was digitally released on March 11 2008[1] and was released to mainstream radio on March 18 2008.[4]

Background

The song is about relationship trouble, describing a situation in which a couple is fighting and one partner says something out of anger that she later regrets, wanting her partner to return. "I guess we're really over", Simpson sings, but immediately afterwards she sings: "So come over, I'm not over it". Speaking about the song, Simpson said: "Every girl has gone through that situation. You put your foot in your mouth and you go, 'Wait, why did I do that?'"[5] According to Simpson, "Little Miss Obsessive" is "a song that kind of relates to the last album, but it grew with the new record."[5] Simpson said that she loved Higgenson's voice and thought he was "the perfect person for the song".[6]

Release

Simpson premiered "Little Miss Obsessive" on the KISS FM DreX Morning Show in Chicago on February 21.[2] It was confirmed as a single in a February 25 interview with Total Request Live and by her official website, which called it the album's "first official single".[7] It was speculated that the song was labelled as the album's first official single because the previous single, "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)", had performed below expectations.[8]

As promotion for the release of Bittersweet World on April 22 2008, Simpson performed "Little Miss Obsessive" on MTV's TRL on April 15, for the episode that aired on April 17.[9] She also performed it on The TODAY Show on April 18,[10] as well as on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on April 21.[11] Simpson also performed the song on The Ellen Degeneres Show and Dance on Sunset.

The track will be released as a CD Single in Australia on August 2, 2008 and in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2008.

Music video plans

In an interview on The Sauce on February 27, Simpson said that she envisioned the song's music video having a "Sliding Doors, Eternal Sunshine effect".[6] Simpson said on TRL that she would be shooting a music video for the song after the end of her club tour in March. No music video is known to have been filmed. However, because Ashlee plans to release the song in Europe and Australia in August, she will most likely film a video in July.

Charts

On the week of March 29 2008, "Little Miss Obsessive" debuted at number seventy-two on the Canadian Hot 100.[12] It peaked at number 28 on the Itunes Hot Digital Songs after a surge in downloads in the week of the release of Bittersweet World. The song also picked up airplay but it was unable to enter the Hot 100 Airplay chart. It has sold over 43,000 legal downloads as of 1 May 2008.[13]
