List of The Open Championship venues
The following is a list of The Open Championship venues, since the competition's foundation in 1860 to the present day. St Andrews has hosted the most Open Championships, 28 in total, with the last one being held in 2005.
Prestwick Golf Club hosted the first Open in 1860, however it has not hosted an Open since 1925. The newest addition to the list of venues is The Westin Turnberry Resort, which hosted its first Open in 1977 and will again play host to the event in 2009. Scotland has been the venue for the most Opens, with 91 being played there since 1860, 46 have been held in England, while only one has been held in Northern Ireland, the venue being Royal Portrush Golf Club.
