The Diplomats

The Diplomats are a Harlem, New York-based hip hop group, more commonly known as Dipset.

Debut

The first commercial appearances of the group was on Cam'Ron's 2000 album S.D.E., released on Epic Records. During this period, various members of the "original" group consisting of Cam'Ron, Jim Jones, Diplomats were first signed together as a group to Roc-A-Fella Records from 2002 to 2004, but are now signed to their own label, Diplomat Records. Each individual artist, however is signed to different record labels, including Koch Records, Asylum Records, Def Jam Records, and others.

Controversy and separation

On December 17, 2007, Jim Jones said in an interview that even though there are controversies between the Dipset members (Jim Jones vs. Cam'ron, Hell Rell & 40 Cal.), they plan to bring back The Diplomats after a year break. Jones, who hasn't been on speaking terms with Dipset honcho Cam'ron, also stated that people from their camps have had conversations and a third installment of the Diplomatic Immunity series is in the works." The album is expected to be released somewhere in the summer of 2008. [1]

Juelz Santana moved from Diplomat Records to Def Jam Records on August 1, 2008. Def Jam also offered a contract to Santana's new crew/movement Skull Gang and solo deals for the other members of the group. Jim Jones, though still Co-CEO and a member of Dipset, built his own label, Byrdgang Records, and now holds a contract with major labels Sony/Columbia. Freekey Zekey has joined Jones' Byrd Gang. He also has his own label, 730 Dips Records, the home of his new crew, 730 Dips. However, in a recent interview, 40 Cal hinted that while the dynamic of the group is likely beyond repair, there may be further collaboration.[2]

Side groups

Several Dipset members have started their own side labels and groups. Jim Jones formed ByrdGang in 2006 with Chink Santana and Freekey Zekey. In 2007, 40 Cal. started Skeme Team, and Freekey Zekey formed the 730 Dips. In 2008, Juelz Santana started the Skull Gang with Jay Bezel, and J.R. Writer formed Writer's Block.

Impact

To date, The Diplomats have had only one real studio album, Diplomatic Immunity. Diplomatic Immunity 2 was a mixtape-album/compilation which included Jim Jones' and Cam'ron's upcoming 2004 albums' singles (Crunk Muzik, Family Ties, Take 'Em to Church). More Than Music Vol. 1, More Than Music Vol. 2, and The Movement Moves On are also considered as compilation albums by DukeDaGod, including Diplomat members' songs.
