ism[1]is a New York City based alternative rock band, formed in 2003, by front man Andre Mistier. ism, which is written with all lowercase letters, released their first album Monkey Underneath, in 2006. Recorded in New York, Monkey Underneath was produced by Mike Rogers, whose previous credits include Sinéad O'Connor, Chubby Checker and Deee-Lite.

ism was signed to STM Recordsin 2004, at which time they began composing tracks including the hit single Breathe. Breathe, the album's first single, was released in November 2005 and was a hit at college radio, becoming the #3 Top Add on the College Music Journal (CMJ) Radio 200 chart.[2]. The song was also the #1 Most Added on NMW's Top 40 Main Chart, where it ultimately hit #5, and was played on nationally on alternative and active rock radio formats. Monkey Underneath was also a #3 Top Add on CMJ's Most Added Chart, debuted at #102 and rose to # 31 on CMJ's Radio 200 Chart[3].

ism is composed of three primary band members: Andre Mistier (vocals, guitar), Gerard Toriello, (lead guitar) and Leigh Battle (bass guitar).

ism recorded their second album (Urgency), produced by Joe Blaney, whose credits include The Clash and The Ramones]. The album was mixed by Mark Needham, whose credits include The Killers Hot Fuss album. Urgency is scheduled to be released in August 2008 by STM Records, distributed through BDG/Red Distribution.

Drummer, Greg Evans, joined the group in 2008 after the album was recorded

ism holds the United States trademark for the name ism as a musical band and recordings.
