Jonás Manuel Gutiérrez (born July 5 1983, in Roque Sáenz Peña, Buenos Aires Province) is an Argentine football winger who plays for Newcastle United. His nickname is "Spider-Man" because when he scores he puts on a Spider-Man mask and goes crazy by shooting webs at the opposing fans. He attained such a name during his time at Real Mallorca.[1]
Club career
Velez and Mallorca
Gutiérrez played for Vélez Sársfield in Argentina between 2001 and 2005. The highlight of his Vélez career was being part of the team that won the Primera División Argentina Clausura Tournament in 2005.
After winning the title in 2005 he signed with RCD Mallorca.
On July 1 2008, Gutiérrez unilaterally rescinded his contract with the Spanish side, after invoking FIFA's Article 17 (commonly known as the Webster ruling). As a result, the club was thought to be investigating a €15 million compensation claim against the player and his new club.[citation needed]
Newcastle United
On July 2, Newcastle United confirmed they had signed the winger on a five year deal for an undisclosed fee.[2]
Gutiérrez told nufc.co.uk that instead of "Gutierrez", the former Real Mallorca man will sport "Jonas" above his squad number 18 he said "Because I like my name."[3]
Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan said on the Argentine's arrival at the club that he would be a crowd pleaser and that he would excite Toon fans. He lived up to Keegan's judgement becoming a cult hero with the Toon Army with many fans sporting Spiderman masks and "Jonas" shirts.
Gutiérrez made his debut for Newcastle United on the second day of the 2008–09 season on August 17. In the game he impressed both fans and pundits as he helped his team to a 1–1 draw against title-holders Manchester United. BBC football pundit Alan Hansen said on Match of the Day Jonás was "the most impressive Premier League debutant".[4]
International career
Gutiérrez earned his first cap for Argentina against France in February 2007 and later on in the year earned his second cap versus Australia on September 11. He earned his third cap on June 18 2008, away to Brazil as part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the match concluding in a 0–0 draw.
